About the School:

Lajamanu community is located approximately 560 km south west of Katherine on the northern edge of the Tanami Desert and the eastern side of Hooker Creek. The school has an enrolment of 230 students from P-12. Lajamanu School is a bilingual school which reflects the community’s vision for students to be strong in two languages. Lajamanu students have learnt Warlpiri as their first language, and continue to use it as their main language at home. Bilingual education is a systematic approach to learning that emphasises the use of the student’s first language to teach curriculum subjects, literacy in both languages and support English as an additional language. English, is gradually integrated into teaching and learning through a planned and careful approach. Currently the school uses whole school English and Maths programs and using the Australian Curriculum to teach all key learning areas.


About the Role:

As a teacher and member of the school community, develop, deliver and evaluate learning programs and monitor student achievement to address individual learning needs and contribute to the achievement of the school’s goals. Liaise and coordinate activities for your teaching area within the school and wider community.

Key duties and responsibilities

  1. Plan, prepare and explicitly deliver quality and effective teaching and learning programs which are consistent with the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers and relevant curriculum policies, work programs and educational trends.
  2. Support senior school students through interaction in a variety of settings and through the active development of supportive learning environments and effective behaviour learning practices.
  3. Provide for the physical, social, cultural and emotional well-being and safety of students whilst at school.
  4. Regularly assess students (diagnostic, formative and summative) for developmental, feedback and reporting purposes.
  5. Maintain student records and samples of work and report on student performance to students, parents, the department and other stakeholders as required.
  6. Establish and maintain appropriate interpersonal relationships between the school, parents and community.


Selection criteria

Essential

  1. Ability to plan, prepare and deliver teaching and learning programs to meet the diverse characteristics, needs and learning styles of middle school students; which are consistent with relevant curriculum policies, work programs and education trends.
  2. Knowledge of and the ability to implement effective and inclusive teaching and learning processes, including the use of learning technology and assessment, to establish a challenging learning environment in which students are encouraged to work towards attainment of their potential.
  3. Ability to communicate effectively with students through appropriate interpersonal skills.
  4. Ability to plan and apply appropriate behaviour learning strategies that contribute to establishing and maintaining a supportive learning environment.
  5. Ability to work collaboratively and communicate effectively with school staff, parents and members of the local school community in order to establish and develop productive partnerships, in a cross-cultural environment to achieve optimal educational outcomes.
  6. Commitment to maintain current and relevant professional learning and meet the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers.

Lajamanu School is located in the community of Lajamanu, 580km South West of Katherine. The main language is Warlpiri. The School provides education to students from Preschool through to the Middle Years. 

Lanjamanu focuses on the priorities of attendance, student achievement in Numeracy, Literacy and Pathways to Employment, as well as community engagement and participation. 

The school implements the 'Aboriginal Literacy Strategy'; explicit teaching in terms of shared reading, guided reading and guided writing. The strategy is further supported through the school's use of the 'First Steps' Program.
