Senior Science Technician

Rugby Free Secondary School (RFSS) is an 11-19 free school which opened in September 2016. The school is growing at an exponential rate and has already proved very popular with parents. RFSS benefits from the backing of a highly supportive local authority and the local MP who both also supported the establishment of our sister school, Rugby Free Primary School, which opened successfully in September 2015.

Key duties and responsibilities 

• Set up a new prep room. 
• Prepare and maintain laboratories and materials for use by staff and students, ensuring that an orderly, safe and healthy environment is provided for teaching activities. 
• Support the science department to ensure proper use and maintenance of resources and equipment. 

General duties of the role 

• Preparation of teaching resources, apparatus and equipment for use by teachers and students  
• Assist teachers in the preparation of exams and required practicals for exams 
• Provide advice to teachers regarding practical sessions and recommend any revisions as suggested by CLEAPPS if necessary  
• Where necessary, ensure new teachers are aware of any health and safety implications of certain higher risk practical’s or demonstrations
• Housekeeping of laboratories including the cleaning of sinks, benches, sockets to ensure the department runs at optimum efficiency and cleanliness 
• Regularly check all equipment used within the science department and undertake basic repairs and notify relevant member of staff of any issues following up to a satisfactory conclusion  
• Ensure equipment and consumables are kept stocked at appropriate levels within the department e.g., paper towels, hand soap etc 
• Order and maintain supplies chemicals, consumables and equipment as appropriate including perishable groceries for lessons  
• Undertake responsibility for insects, animals and plant materials 
• Maintain inventory of all equipment for the department 
• Undertake administration and reprographic's tasks as required 

Health & Safety 

• Ensure that statutory safety regulations and safe practice is complied with 
• Follow all H&S policies and procedures to ensure relevant regulations such as COSHH are adhered to and observed 
• Undertake all risk assessments ensuring they are signed off and up to date 
• Replenish First Aid kits and eye wash bottle/tubing in every lab 
• Maintenance and security of the chemical stores & radioactive sources including the appropriate storage and handling of all materials 
• Disposal of waste products in accordance with the relevant regulations, guidelines and school procedures 
• To undertake any other duties deemed appropriate for this, or similar pay grade. The nature of the duties and responsibilities may change from time to time 

Professional Development 

• To take responsibility for personal continuing professional development. 
• To take part, as appropriate, in the Trust professional development programme. 
• To engage actively in the Performance Management Review process. 
• To evaluate own personal performance through self-evaluation and learn from the effective practice of others and from evidence

Safeguarding  

• To ensure that all students have a safe environment in which they can learn, reporting any concern about the environment to a member of the site team or if appropriate to one of the Designated Safeguarding Leaders.  
• To be aware of systems which support safeguarding and following the procedures as highlighted in the Safeguarding Policy  
• To identify children who may benefit from early help as soon as possible and discuss this with one of the Designated Safeguarding Leaders  
• To consider at all times what is in the best interests of the child 
• To protect children from maltreatment; preventing impairment of children’s health or development; ensuring that children grow up in circumstances consistent with the provision of safe and effective care 
• To take action to enable all children to have the best outcomes 

General responsibilities of all Rugby Free Secondary School Staff: 

• To support the Trust’s responsibility to provide and monitor opportunities for the personal and academic growth of students. 
• Individuals have a responsibility for promoting and safeguarding the welfare of children and young people they are responsible for or come into contact with. Part of this responsibility involves the checking of visitor identification at the point of school entry and the issuing of relevant safeguarding information 
• To ensure all tasks are carried out with due regard to Health and Safety 
• To remain confidential at all times 
• To adhere to the ethos of the school 
• To promote the agreed vision and aims of the school 
• To set an example of personal integrity and professional conduct
