Detail: St Mary’s School has just 23 children aged between 3 and 16, and 6 teachers. The average class size is 4/5.        

The Senior Teacher will help provide and develop leadership to the school, develop the English language and literature curriculum and deliver teacher training. Some teaching will also be required. The successful applicant will have experience in teaching English up to IGCSE.

Personal and communication skills are essential tools as is the ability to work with the local team and community. A flexible approach is also needed. The successful applicants will also embrace the demands of Tristan’s unique setting and history and show a willingness to integrate with the community and share their skills.    

Although two positions are being advertised, we would consider appointing a couple.

The school follows the UK curriculum.

The Island: Tristan is one of the United Kingdom’s Overseas Territories and is the world’s remotest inhabited island. There is just one village where the population of 260 live.  Tristan Da Cunha is one of a set of islands in the South Atlantic, which are the most remote inhabited archipelago in the world. The nearest populated land mass is the island of St. Helena, 1,200 kilometres away. St Mary's School is located on Tristan's only permanently inhabited locale, known as Edinburgh of the Seven Seas. Discovered by Portuguese sailors in 1506, the islands have been a British territory since 1816.

The school is perfect for those wishing to work within an open and sharing community. Most of the working population are employed by the government with the fishing company employing some full time staff. Apart from their day jobs, islanders also farm, fish and work part time in the fishing factory. People are busy. The total population of the island is 260, ensuring small class sizes and close personal connections between teacher and student. Students are taught between the ages of 3-16.

First opened in 1971, the school has operated from its current campus since 1975. Facilities include five classrooms, a library, a hall with stage, a computer suite, a cookery room, and a craft/science room. School and community are located on the island's only patch of arable land, the rest dominated by a volcano that last erupted in 1961.
