Job overview

We seeking to appoint a well qualified and experienced teacher of A level and GCSE Mathematics to join our bank of sessional tutors.

Rochester Independent College was founded as ‘Rochester Tutors’ in 1984 and continues to offer exam focussed tuition. As well as a full secondary education from year 7 to sixth form, the College specialises in intensive one year A level and GCSE courses and short retake courses. There is no uniform and students and teachers are on first name terms. The average class size is 8. We have 345 students from the age of 11 and offer a fresh alternative to traditional independent education. We have 105 boarding students each year from 30 different countries. We also offer part time A level and GCSE teaching and revision courses for children at other schools in the local area. We have a good track record of excellent results and are ranked in the top 2% of schools in England for value added progress in sixth form.

These posts are designed to supplement the teaching of our full-time members of teaching staff and may include:

Running revision courses in the autumn for the proposed GCSE and A level sittings.

Teaching on our revision courses during the Easter holidays

Running extra tutoring sessions for both RIC and external students after 4pm weekdays or on a Saturday morning

Running subject specific support clinics for our A level and GCSE boarding students 7.00pm-9.00pm weekday evenings

Hours will be on an as and when required basis throughout the academic year. The availability of teaching hours in particular subject areas will not be confirmed until early September and may change during the course of the year. All teaching takes place on our Star Hill campus in central Rochester.

These opportunities would suit experienced tutors and teachers with good academic qualifications. We particularly welcome tutors who have experience working as GCSE and A level examiners in their subject areas. QTS is not a requirement.

Rochester Independent College is committed to safeguarding children and young people. All post holders are subject to a satisfactory enhanced DBS disclosure and a check of their career history.

Hourly paid: £30.00 – £55.00 per hour, depending on experience and qualifications.

Introduction

RIC aims to give students an enjoyable and successful experience of school in an international environment with small classes and high quality teaching and pastoral care.

The focus is on examination success and preparation for university in a lively, supportive and informal atmosphere.

We encourage students to search for their own answers, to voice their opinions, to think critically, creatively and independently. We value academic and creative achievements equally.

Our only entrance qualifications are an honest determination to work hard and behave well.

We aim for students to leave us not only with good examination results but also with enthusiasm for the future and new confidence about themselves and their education.

The college ethos is designed to foster respect, challenge prejudice and develop an imaginative and informed attitude.

The college aims to play a role in the local community with a particular emphasis on the arts and the environment and to support the growth, welfare and development of its staff.
