Line Management: Deputy Site Manager>Site Manager> Business Manager> Headteacher
Purpose:
To work with other members of the Site Team to provide an effective and efficient caretaking and handyman service to the College
To undertake duties and tasks by working with other members of the team to allocate work equitably and fairly
To take an operational responsibility for ensuring that the premises and plant remain fit for purpose
Where required, to work with other members of staff to ensure that the needs of the institution are met in relation to the discharge of duties relating to this post
To work in the best interests of the students at all times
Security
Issue keys to staff and maintain a key register. Note, issue of keys will be authorised by the Deputy Site Manager/ Site Manager/Business Manager
Lock and unlock gates and entrance doors and check as far as is practicable that the premises have not been disturbed
Switch on/off lights according to need
Open/close windows according to need
Set and unset security alarms
Provide access to the college as may reasonably be required outside normal hours of opening, including access in the event of flood, snow or similar emergencies, in line with College policies and procedure
NOTE: Where entry is by a designated key holder, that person, if left to lock up, assumes responsibility for security on that occasion.
Heating and Hot Water Systems
Operate heating plant so that the required temperatures are maintained and an adequate supply of hot water is available
Monitor automatic frost protection procedures during cold weather
Ensure adequate fuel supplies are maintained
Maintenance of Building and Equipment
Undertake site health & safety inspection/services and record the results to the standard specified by the Deputy Site Manager or Site Manger.
To undertake routine inspection of ancillary equipment e.g. pumps, batteries, window blinds etc.
Undertake routine inspection of the building fabric
Undertake routine inspection and testing of the fire and security alarm systems in accordance with legislation and good practice
Keep caretaking and cleaning equipment in a safe and proper working condition
Replace light bulbs and tubes
Check that all drains and gullies are free-flowing and clean blockages as necessary
Carry out minor repairs and improvements to property, fixtures, fittings and equipment, which are within the scope of an unskilled handyman
Undertake decorating duties as required
Report to the Deputy Site Manager any repairs or maintenance work which is beyond the competence and responsibility of the Site Team
Direct workmen and contractors to the sites of repair and maintenance work adhering to the signing in arrangements
Keep all hard areas and paths free from litter and excessive accumulation of dirt or rubbish
Empty litter bins at the end of each College day or more frequently if required
Dispose of all rubbish appropriately
Keep paths, entrances and communal areas free of ice and snow to ensure the safety of students, staff and visitors whilst on site
Report any defects found on/around site to the Deputy Site Manager.
Immediately report any health & safety concerns found on/around site to the Deputy Site Manager.
NOTE: Site Officer activities are limited to situations where safe access can be obtained.
Supervision
Work with the Deputy Site Manager to plan and allocate the work of cleaning and litter picking staff
Instruct cleaners in all aspects of their work
Supervise cleaners and litter pickers in the discharge of their duties e.g. maintain good working relationships and encourage team spirit, ensure good timekeeping, deal with routine issues, grievances and problems and ensure that work is carried out correctly and promptly
Assist in the recruitment of cleaning staff
Ensure that the College premises and furnishings are cleaned in accordance with the required standards and monitor quality of cleaning provision
Maintain administration records in a complete and timely manner
General
Prepare for routine college and after college activities, including lettings and ensure the premises are fit for purpose at the end of each day
Move, lay out and stack chairs, desks, tables, etc.
Take delivery, store and distribute stock, materials and other goods,
Dispatch goods from the college if required.
Replenish soap, toilet rolls and towels
Carry out procedures in line with College policy and working practices in the event of fire, flood, breaking and entering, accident or major damage.
Undertake emergency cleaning duties in the absence of cleaning staff during normal session and break times
To take a personal and corporate responsibility for the safety and wellbeing of all site users in line with the College Health and Safety policy and procedures
To act as First Aider as determined by institutional need
Assist with basic grounds maintenance duties as required
Emergency Situations
At the request of the emergency services and other authorities, provide access to the buildings and M&E installations in the event of an emergency
In the event of an emergency situation arising out of school hours, to attend the site at the request of the Site Manager/Business Manager or other member of SLT and undertake reasonable duties as requested by the authority in charge of the emergency situation
Other Duties
Caretaking services associated with non-core hour’s use of the College will be required, for the most part this requirement will be met by working to an established rota system. In the event that additional caretaking services are required Site Officers may be asked to provide these services for a reasonable number of such functions in each term, payment at the appropriate rate will apply.
To undertake any other reasonable duty as directed by the Head Teacher or delegated alternative.
Wellbeing
Ensure all pupils have equal access to learning using appropriate strategies and resources, where necessary.
Liaise with pastoral staff members to ensure the wellbeing of pupils and their full participation in school life.
Raise any concerns regarding pupils’ behaviour with the relevant Raising Standards Lead.
Implement any specific arrangements for individual pupils, ensuring that relevant staff members are aware of the measures in place.
Provide individual pastoral support to pupils, where necessary.
Continuously motivate and challenge pupils, whilst promoting and reinforcing self-esteem.
Safeguarding
To have the ability to safeguard and promote the welfare of children and young people.
Appreciate the significance of safeguarding and interprets this accurately for all individual children and young people whatever their life circumstances.
To have a good understanding of the safeguarding agenda and can demonstrate an ability to contribute towards a safe environment.
The ability to converse at ease with members of the public and provide advice and information in accurate spoken English is essential for the post.

About Abbey College, Ramsey
Abbey College, Ramsey is located in a small market town, almost half way between Huntingdon and Peterborough and within easy reach of Cambridge and London. The College is set within extensive, historic and beautiful grounds close to the Parish Church of St Thomas A Becket. The College is a large 11-18 school with a catchment which extends over a wide rural area.
There are approximately 1090 students on role, including a sixth form of 120. We currently have around 70 members of teaching staff with an additional support team of over 75 members of staff.
We have high aspirations as a College as our 2016 results showed. Our A level and BTEC results placed us the sixth best in Cambridgeshire, outdoing many private schools, and our GCSE results were our highest ever, with a progress 8 figure of 0.21. We are also oversubscribed for the second year in a row this year by over 40% and our attendance is 2% higher than the national averages.
