Caretaker - assisting the Facilities Manager

Main Purpose of Job:  • Support the Facilities Manager to deliver the maintenance, caretaking, cleaning and Health & Safety activities of the school and to ensure the safety and sound condition of the buildings, facilities and grounds. 

 General Responsibilities:  Under the guidance and instruction of the Facilities Manager or senior person, a Site Technician will undertake repair and maintenance of the school site and Health & Safety and general activities of the school to ensure the smooth running of the school and the safety, security and sound condition of buildings, facilities and grounds.  

The keeping of buildings and furnishings in good repair and decorative order. To daily, on arrival, check that heating, water, electricity and gas controls and timers are working correctly, in all school areas, and take action to rectify any malfunction. To daily, on arrival, inspect the condition of the site, take appropriate action to rectify any deficiency which poses a health and safety risk or restricts or has the potential to restrict the smooth running of the school and to check for break-ins or other defect of the site. To report on defects in buildings, fittings and plant that may affect the smooth running of the school and as required by Health and Safety Regulations. To undertake repairs and maintenance on furnishings, buildings and fixtures and fittings to ensure a safe and functioning environment is maintained. To help co-ordinate and supervise on-site contractors to ensure the smooth operation of all maintenance work on site.

Site security and safety: To open and close the premises at designated times, including evenings and weekends, and to be responsible for general security.  To carry out a daily check of the security of the buildings (latch windows, close doors, etc) and set alarms before locking up. To make regular tours of the site, noting and reporting on matters affecting the health and safety of persons on the site and the general smooth running of the facilities. To undertake statutory checks and health and safety monitoring activities and risk assessments as directed.  

 To keep the grounds and immediate surrounds litter and graffiti free:

 To empty outside litter bins after lunch break each day. To clean and ensure the tidiness of paths, drives and other hard surfaces within site.  To carry out minor pruning of shrubs and tree branches.  To keep paths, access points and entrances free of snow and ice to ensure safe passage.  To undertake specified indoor cleaning duties, including the inside surfaces of windows up to 11 ft (3.3m) from floor level, according to an agreed schedule. To carry out the cleaning of lamp shades and light diffusers, taking into account instructions regarding working at heights. To clean toilets at specific times through the day and to replenish as necessary soap and toilet paper in all lavatories. To undertake emergency cleaning (especially the toilets). Assist in the maintenance of the school minibuses, ensuring that all vehicles are fit for the road by undertaking routine checks of lights, tyres, oil and water levels and to clean the minibuses on a regular basis.  

General porterage and preparation of the school for functions: To prepare for all school functions and events, whether year assemblies, induction days, training days, parent evenings, etc – including the setting out of chairs and other furniture or equipment and return to store of all such furniture including examination desks, etc. To act as a first point of contact for all deliveries, keep the main reception aand passageways clear of delivered goods by their distribution as soon as they have been received and checked. To oversee general porterage of furniture and other items as required. To as required, carry out errands, such as escorting moneys to the bank, as directed by the Line Manager. 

 Other :- Maintain an appropriate first aid qualification and provide first aid to students, staff and visitors as required. Comply with Health & Safety, Fire regulations and other school policies at all times to ensure a safe environment is maintained.  To maintain high personal professional standards of attendance, punctuality, appearance, conduct and develop positive working relationships with students, parents and staff.  To be responsible for your own continuing self-development, undertaking training as appropriate.
