We are searching for an energetic high school social studies teacher to join our faculty at the Rafa Nadal International School which is managed by The Academy International School on the beautiful island of Mallorca, Spain. The social studies teacher’s responsibilities include teaching elements of history, geography, politics, economics, religion, and culture to pupils. You should keep abreast of current events and initiate spirited, respectful debates amongst students and have a strong cultural sensitivity in this international school setting. 

EXPECTATIONS, EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS

Bachelor’s degree or higher

Experience in SS instruction in a secondary school setting

Flexibility and a team-spirit work ethic

Well-developed interpersonal skills

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

USA Certification

Three or more years teaching experience

Experience in differentiating instruction, and supporting students with learning challenges

Knowledge of the American style of education and standards

ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The duties of the Social Studies teacher may include, but are not limited to the following tasks:

Instruction

Providing instruction to students in grades 6 to 12, as requested

Ability to perform essential functions of the position

Willingly assisting the instructional process in its many forms

Supporting school-wide instructional initiatives

Gathering student data through observation, dialogue, testing tools, etc., and designing strategies to meet student needs

Remaining current with American AERO Standards and other instructional requirements

Supporting student learning through thoughtful planning and preparation and sound classroom management practices

Driving personal Professional Development

Staying informed on the latest trends in Social Studies education

Strong IT skills are necessary (including technology in the classroom, learning platforms such as Google Classroom).

Assessment

Assessing student progress

Maintaining updated gradebooks, tracking the data, drafting report cards

Assisting in conducting school-wide benchmark assessments (PSAT, etc) when needed

Other Duties

Effectively communicating with school administrators, teachers, student service personnel, parents regarding student performance and plans for improvement

Participating in school meetings as needed

Supporting students and administration in Positive Behavior Intervention and Support philosophy

Assisting students in adopting a behavior conducive to success in the classroom setting

Participating in faculty meetings and professional learning communities meetings

Assisting in orientation and open classes as needed

Modeling non-discriminatory practices in all activities

Performing other job related functions as may be assigned

Serving as Team Leader if requested

Setting professional standards (dress, punctuality, etc.)

Community-Based Learning Initiatives

Assisting in the delivery of curriculum that utilizes community resources to enrich the learning experiences of students

SALARY AND PACKAGE

The salaries at school all follow the Spanish pay scales. The pay increases when there is an increase announced across Spain.

Our package includes:

Salary according to the Spanish national guidelines

May lead to permanent contract

National health insurance

Administrative support with the legal documentation such as paperwork related to becoming a resident in Spain, registering with a doctor, opening a bank account, etc.

Support and advice on finding accommodation. We will provide relocation assistance by paying travel costs and in addition we will also offer paid accommodation for the 1st month. 

Holidays are in line with other international schools in Spain and then adapted to the local bank holidays.

OUR SCHOOL DAY

We run 2 shifts. Teachers start at 8:00 and finish at 16:00 or start at 10:00 and finish at 18:00.  Teachers are expected to attend the weekly staff meeting (timetable permitting).

About The Academy International School

The Academy International School is a co-educational independent all-through school for students aged 2-19. It is based in Mallorca in Spain.

The school was opened in 1985 with 25 children and two teachers. Now, it has about 490 pupils. Students can continue their education up to IGCSE examination level and then move to our sixth form International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP).

We are the only International British School in Mallorca that offers the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP). The programme complements our curriculum from Nursery to Year 11 and provides the students with a qualification that is widely recognized by the world’s leading universities.

At our Primary School we are very lucky to have much outdoor space with a school garden, orchard, paddock for our horses, tennis court, swimming pool and football pitches.

Our new secondary site is purpose built for young adults creating the optimum learning environment and providing the ideal stepping stone to university and adult life. We have collaborative learning spaces, the latest technology as tools for teaching and learning, state of the art science labs, an outdoor amphitheatre, padel tennis courts, swimming pools and extensive sports facilities.

The Academy International School has been inspected by the Cambridge University Examination Board and is a recognised examination centre. The school is also a member of the National Association of British Schools in Spain and is inspected regularly both by British inspectors and inspectors from the Spanish Ministry of Education and Science.  After several years of hard work preparing for the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme we are a certified IB World School.

The student body is about 50% Spanish, 20% British, 10% Scandinavian and the other 20% represent another 30 nationalities.

The teaching staff is 90% British.
