Job overview

The Role

We are seeking to appoint an excellent Sociology and History teacher who has strong subject knowledge in both areas and has experience of teaching Sociology at GCSE/A Level, as well as well as History up to GCSE.

Committed to raising attainment, you will have the ability to motivate students and help develop engaging and inspiring curriculum. With a good subject knowledge and a love of teaching we are looking for someone who is keen to be part of the team.

The Humanities department has gone from strength to strength in recent years as we offer more curriculum options at GCSE and A Level.  The team are passionate subject specialists who are friendly and supportive. We are now able to offer History, Geography, RE, Sociology and Psychology at GCSE as well as A Level, with the addition of Politics and Law. The department has seen a rapidly increasing growth in the number of students choosing options within the humanities disciplines, both at KS4 and KS5 and joining us at this time could offer some exciting opportunities. Our staff strive to make lessons enjoyable yet challenging for students to encourage a love of learning and confidence in their own understanding. We pride ourselves on our commitment to ensuring pupils achieve their full potential and push themselves beyond their comfort zones.

In addition, you will be Head of Learning to our new Year 7 students (from September 2021).  You will work closely with the Inclusion team and line manage an Assistant Head of Learning, as well as a tutor team to ensure all students get the best possible pastoral care throughout their time at Highcrest, sharing responsibility for the learning and personal development of all students.  You will move through the years with your year group to ensure they maximise their potential.

The role includes leading and monitoring a tutor time programme, organising and monitoring Life Lesson, as well as taking a strategic lead to ensure the students display the highest level of attendance, punctuality and behaviour throughout school.

About Us

Our Ofsted Report February 2020 says “The school has a warm and welcoming atmosphere” and “Pupils at The Highcrest Academy happily live up to the school’s motto of ‘aspire and achieve' ...”.

Our aim is to establish a culture of excellence throughout every element of our academy and move us from Good to Outstanding.

Just 30 minutes by train from Central London, The Highcrest Academy is the first All Ability Academy in the county of Buckinghamshire. It is culturally diverse and a vibrant school making it a fantastic place to teach. We have some students who will need all your support and yet have also featured in the national Ofsted report for providing challenge to the most able.

There are approximately 1,000 students on roll, which includes the Sixth Form. A new building programme, completed last year, comprises a brand-new Sixth Form Centre, sports facilities including a gym, and a new restaurant and coffee shop for both students and staff. We also have a thriving House system that brings our whole school community together.

In Return

Highcrest offers both an excellent induction and support programme for NQTs and an innovative and extensive CPD package for more experienced teachers. This provision of training has been praised as outstanding by an external assessor and highlighted in the local press.  For NQTs, we provide weekly CPD meetings with experienced members of staff, time-tabled and protected Mentor Meetings on a weekly basis, subject knowledge time with departments and an extensive personalised CPD plan. There is also the possibility of shared living accommodation.

Staff feel very well supported by senior leaders. According to staff, they feel valued because senior leaders are approachable ...”  Ofsted Report February 2020.

A thriving school in the heart of the community, with free on-site parking, staff recognition schemes and free gym to counter the “Friday Biscuits” and on-site coffee shop!
