Job overview

Highly Competitive Salary

Full time, Permanent

September 2020 start

In line with the Government’s announcement, our academy is operating on a rota basis to allow those children of workers critical to the COVID-19 response the opportunity to attend. However, during this period it is our intention to continue with essential recruitment for key positions starting in September 2020. We want to reassure applicants that effective measures will be implemented to ensure their health and wellbeing and in most cases we will use a virtual recruitment process.

Thank you for your cooperation during this difficult time.

Following our previous recruitment round, we have recruited a number of fantastic people and there is a palpable sense of excitement around next year. With sixteen new starters confirmed, we still have a small number of vacancies remaining. There is no question that Sir Herbert Leon Academy is a school that requires improvement and that there is a great deal of work to be done in the academy but it is our intention that this school will be one of the top in the region in as short a time as possible. To that end, we are seeking exceptional teachers and leaders to join us in turning this school around.

The Executive Director for the academy was previously responsible for the turnaround of Harris Battersea which rose to become one of the top ten schools in the country after being one of the worst in London for many decades.  With his support, the changes at this school will be rapid and there will be many opportunities for promotion amongst staff who are capable of doing something special for the students within our care.

As a Lead Practitioner of Spanish, you will be responsible for driving forward teaching and learning across the whole academy as well as being an excellent teacher in your own classroom. You will work with teachers across a range of subjects to improve their practice and will also be given a whole-school responsibility in keeping with your personal preferences. Academies should be disciplined but also a place of warmth and staffed by people who are caring, smart and hard-working. As a Lead Practitioner you will help shape and embed the ethos of the school and make the academy something that the community can be proud of.

The school believes that teachers should focus on marking, planning and teaching and that everything else is a distraction. This means that teachers will never be asked to make a phone-call home about behaviour, they will never be asked to accept a student from another classroom and they will never be asked to run a detention. The Senior Leadership Team will manage all of this so that teachers can set about filling the gaps in knowledge that too many supply teachers have left in our students.

Situated in an area of high deprivation next to the Lakes Estate in Bletchley, the school mirrors many of the issues that are common to an inner-city school. The academy requires people who will stop at nothing to improve the lives of our pupils, many of whom do not have the easiest of starts in life and, side-by-side with a group of like-minded staff, are intolerant of mediocrity, relentless in the application of high standards and tenacious in their belief that students are always capable of more. Equally, you can expect to be well-compensated: we want the best teachers and it is important that we recognise the worth of exceptional people.

Should you wish to find out more then please email the Executive Director, David Moody using dmoody@academiesenterprisetrust.org and he will be more than happy to speak to you on the phone or in person at the school.

Sir Herbert Leon Academy is an 11-19 Mixed Comprehensive in Bletchley, South Milton Keynes. Our academy has 587 learners and employs around 100 dedicated teachers and support staff. The academy's senior leadership team places high priority on colleagues' mental health and work/life balance and has established systems to allow staff to flourish. There is a centralised behaviour system, a clear line management structure and opportunities for personal and professional development. As Sir Herbert Leon is a relatively small secondary school, new staff can foster strong relationships with both colleagues and students very swiftly, which enables them to embed within their new team quickly and know how best to teach students, according to their individual needs. The students are the beating heart of the school; it is a privilege to teach them as we continue on our journey to raise aspirations and outcomes for the local community.

At Sir Herbert Leon Academy we are totally committed to each and every student’s academic success, personal well-being and preparation for the future. We are proud to be an inclusive community school which welcomes all cultures, faiths and beliefs. Our core purpose is to enable all young people to have the opportunities to make exceptional progress both academically and in their life outside of the classroom so that they are able to live fulfilling and successful lives.

Milton Keynes

Milton Keynes has excellent rail connections to the rest of the UK.  Trains run from Milton Keynes Central to London Euston every 5-15 minutes, with the fastest journeys taking just 34 minutes.  There is a brand new dual carriageway linking Milton Keynes to the M1.

There are good commuter links to London, Cambridge, Oxford and the Midlands.

Ofsted

We are currently disappointingly judged to be 'Inadequate' following our full inspection in May 2022. To view all our Ofsted reports please click here.

In the short period of time since the report has been published, the school and new Principal have moved to ensure that swift action has and is being taken to address the concerns raised in the report.
