Job overview

An exciting opportunity to join a supportive and collaborative team in a flourishing  independent school which caters for students with special educational needs (SEND).

Abingdon House School and College is a unique and successful Independent Day School for children with special educational needs including autism, ADHD, dyslexia, dyspraxia and other associated needs, aged 5-19. The school operates a mainstream styled provision, delivering holistic and integrated programmes of education, therapy and personal development for its students.

The SENCo will report to the Head of SEN and will be allocated a caseload of students for which they are responsible for the following:

  • Ensure that the academic and therapeutic provision is delivered as described in the EHCP and that students’ needs are met.
  • Keep IEPs and student profiles/files updated with new information on needs and provision.
  • Inform staff of new information/professional reports relevant to their practice.
  • Liaise closely with Teachers to be aware of the students’ performance and difficulties in class so that the effectiveness of input may be monitored qualitatively, as well as quantitatively through formal assessment.
  • Advise Teachers/TAs to ensure best SEN teaching practice e.g. support to differentiate, provision of multisensory learning opportunities, classroom management, etc.
  • Lead case conferences to produce IEPs and coordinate target setting with teaching and therapy teams.
  • Check for progression within targets and academic/therapeutic data, and follow up with staff where there is a cause for concern.
  • Oversee and coordinate the Annual Review/EHCNA processes in compliance with procedures and deadlines of School, LA and SEN Code of Practice.
  • Prepare paperwork and chair Annual Reviews for students with EHCPs.
  • Liaise with parents’ legal representatives and provide paperwork for appeals/tribunals as requested.
  • Conduct formal or  informal reading assessments on trial students and provide feedback on Assessment Day Form for the Admissions Team.

In addition the SENCO may also carry a small teaching load.

Classes are based on 10 students and are mixed age (generally across 2 year groups).  Students are studying the national curriculum across Key Stages 1-4 (not necessarily in line with their chronological age), as well as engaging in Functional Skills and BTEC qualifications.  All teachers teach across the subject areas for the Key Stage 1-3 curriculum, with subject specialist teachers for the Key Stage 4 curriculum.  Therapy is integrated across the curriculum, as well as provided on individual and small group basis.

The successful applicant will:

Be primary or secondary trained (QTS desirable).

Already have or be willing to undertake the accredited SENCO qualification.

Have knowledge and understanding of the SEN Code of Practice.

Have high expectations and aspirations for our students.

Be a true team player who enjoys working collaboratively within a close knit team dedicated to ensuring our learning environment is a positive and welcoming one for all to enjoy and thrive within.

Abingdon House School and College is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people.
