Job overview

Freshsteps Independent School is an OFSTED graded ‘outstanding’ independent alternative provision. The school caters for pupils aged 5-16 years who have SEMH / SEN. We have an exciting new opportunity available at our school to work with pupils with SEMH/ special educational needs. We wish recruit an experienced SENCO to join us during this exciting time of expansion and progress.

The school has recently moved site and has invested in the construction of brand new classrooms, sports arena, gym area, library area and an indoor therapeutic, split level soft-play structure. The school is fully resourced and equipped.

Our pupils have been referred from mainstream schools due to various needs including behavioural, low numeracy, literacy, speech and language and SEMH. They have wonderful personalities and enjoy the benefit of an engaging, hands-on learning style and adapted curriculum. The school believes that every student can realise their true potential with the right support and teaching. Therefore, it sets high standards for both pupils and staff.

The curriculum at FreshSteps is very rich including horse-riding, cookery, boxercise classes and we work in partnership with the Tottenham Hotspur Foundation.

The school received an ‘outstanding’ rating from OFSTED in its inspection in November 2017 and again most recently in its inspection in February 2020, stating that the school ‘inspires pupils to achieve more than what they believe they are capable of’.

We are looking to appoint a SENCO to ensure the Special Education Needs (SEN) provision is effectively and efficiently managed and coordinated across the site and that all legal requirements in respect of students with special education needs are being met.  The majority of the pupils at FreshSteps have an EHCP and  we are looking for an individual who is keen to ensure that every one of our pupils has the access to the support that they need.

We would like the individual to have strong organisational skills and a positive attitude towards SEN . The ability to work well and build good relationships with staff, parents and local authorities is also key to the success of this role.

Salary is dependent on skills and experience.

Hours of work: 7.40am - 4.30pm

FreshSteps offers ongoing training and CPD to all staff which is updated annually and at various points throughout the academic year.

The school focuses on staff wellbeing and has a wellbeing programme in place for staff including wellbeing days, activities and weekly individual wellbeing meetings.

The school also offers an end of year team bonding weekend trip for its staff.

Freshsteps is committed to safeguarding and protecting the children and young people that we work with. As such, all posts are subject to our safer recruitment process, including the disclosure of criminal records and vetting checks. We ensure that we have a range of policies and procedures in place which promote safeguarding and safer working practices across the school. Offers are subject to satisfactory references.

ALL positions at FreshSteps are on a self-employment basis. Successful candidates will be offered renewable yearly contracts (following a successful probation period) and support from our accountant to register with HMRC.

Interviews will be held as early as week commencing 8th February 2021 so we strongly encourage applicants to apply at their earliest opportunity.
