The purpose of the Special Educational Needs Teaching Assistant role is to provide educational, pastoral, behavioural and at times, personal care support for students within a special educational needs setting.

The range of needs in this school incorporates PMLD, SLD, Autism and SEMH, as well as complex needs. Learners need staff members who can be adaptable.  We are looking for individuals with transferable skills who are: Vigilant observers, quick on feet, proactive team players, hardworking, positive and fun. We would like applicants to have experience working with children, young people or adults with special educational needs in an educational, care or voluntary capacity that we are able to reference.

The successful candidates for this Special Educational Needs Teaching Assistant role will also have high standards of working practice; a flexible and adaptable approach; a genuine interest in doing the best for the young people and their future, be caring, committed, reliable with a happy outlook.

Skills in sign language, Makaton, de-escalation, and intensive interaction will also be helpful. However training in some of these areas can be provided.

In the course of this Special Educational Needs Teaching Assistant role responsibilities will include:

Supporting across all areas of curriculum, both in and outside of lessons (including lunch, break and snack times)

Assisting with feeding and personal care, hoisting, moving & handling as appropriate

Communicating and interacting with students in their preferred medium of communication – including the use of signs and symbols for non verbal and pre-verbal students

Working both 1:1 and more broadly within the class

It is important that you must be adaptable and open to change. Schools are dynamic working environments where staffing and need can change at short notice.  We require staff who can adapt to differing needs, ways of working and approaches, often within the same day – and do this in a positive, proactive and organised way.

In the long term this way of working will assist with honing and development of strong and skills.

Team Teach training is advantageous for this role but can be offered free of charge by Vision for Education.
