Specialist Literacy Teaching Assistant

30 hours per week, term time only plus 5 days (39 weeks)

Outwood Academy has an exciting opportunity for an experienced practitioner to work as part of the English curriculum department, providing specialist support in English, dyslexia, EAL and any other necessary intervention with students who require additional mentoring to achieve their GCSEs. You will have excellent subject knowledge and a passion for English literacy and oracy. You will want to encourage students to love English as much as we do. This rewarding position would suit an experienced teaching assistant or someone with a background teaching English. The role is permanent and you would be instrumental in supporting our amazing students, supporting them by creating a culture of success, ensuring they have a positive learning environment to increase student attainment, achievement and social and emotional development.

We expect our staff to bring out the best in each and every student. The successful candidate will work as part of an inclusion team primarily to support literacy, but they will also support students in all necessary interventions. A key focus will be to increase student’s ability to access all areas of the curriculum. Examples of the work the successful candidate will be expected to deliver are:

• Take responsibility for a caseload of students inside and outside of the classroom during structured or unstructured time.
• Assess the needs of students and use detailed knowledge and specialist skills to support students’ educational progress and attainment.
• Deliver intervention programs to individuals and small groups, preparing relevant and appropriate learning experiences in conjunction with the department staff.
• Track and monitor student life skill targets and/or EHCP outcomes, discussing progress with parents and agreeing new targets/EHCP outcomes at Interim Reviews.

Driving may be required within this role for home visits.
