Job overview

SUFFOLK COUNTY COUNCIL, LOWESTOFT

32.5 hpw.

Ref: SCC02504

Based at Riverside, Lowestoft.

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a qualified and experienced Teacher of the Deaf to join the Suffolk Sensory and Communication Team. You will initially be predominantly based at Bungay High School, in the north of the county. Bungay High School has already undertaken some measures and training to ensure they can support the needs of deaf and hearing-impaired learners, including those who are BSL first language users.

The role will include working with mainstream teachers and highly qualified communication support workers to continue to promote deaf awareness and inclusive practice in the school community.

This is a fantastic time to work alongside a mainstream team that have embraced inclusive practice and have already demonstrated their commitment to promoting deaf friendly practice.

You will be employed by the local authority and be part of the CYP Sensory and Communication Service. The service consists of a multi-disciplinary team that includes teachers and a variety of support staff. The team works across Suffolk and provides specialist support for children and young people with hearing, visual or multi-sensory impairments as well as those with speech and language difficulties aged 0-25.

In this role, you will work to ensure equal access to the curriculum for deaf and hearing-impaired learners. You will devise and deliver specific intervention programs for individual deaf learners and seek to promote deaf friendly, inclusive practice and awareness for all learners within the school.

This school has demonstrated a deep commitment to inclusive practice for deaf learners and prides itself on being "a caring school, in which every individual matters and all students are encouraged to work hard to achieve their potential".

In Suffolk, we are building a team that can deliver services for children and young people with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities, that are among the best and most innovative in England. Our new management team is passionate about transforming the experiences of Suffolk children, young people and their families.

We are working closely with our family representatives and our partners in health and social care and we have made improvements, but we still have a great deal to achieve and if you share our values and ambitions, we would love you to join our team. You will need to have the highest standards, be able to deliver change quickly and willing to give your all.

In return, you will have the satisfaction of being part of a strong and vibrant service that makes a real difference for children and young people every day.

If you would like any further information and / or an informal discussion, please contact Sara Brierton, Education Consultant for Hearing Impaired Children and Young People on 07912 596976.
