Role:

We are looking for an experienced Specialist Teaching Assistant for Maths to provide effective support to students with SEND, helping to ensure that they make at least good progress in the subject whilst at the academy. 

Duties and Responsibilities

  • To provide subject specific 1 to 1 and small group intervention for students as required.
  • To pay particular attention to the development of the students’ literacy and numeracy skills.
  • To help to develop resources, including resources on the Virtual Learning Environment (VLE), which support the progress of SEND students.
  • To offer advice to teaching staff to help them teach students with SEND effectively.
  • To use effective methods to track the progress of relevant students, and work with the SENDCo, Assistant SENDCo and subject specific leader to ensure that effective intervention is put in place when students are underachieving.
  • Completing data reports/student intervention logs and reports termly, tracking and monitoring the impact of the interventions provided.
  • To encourage student participation in activities led by the teacher and interaction with others.
  • To establish good relationships with students, acting as a role model and being aware of and responding appropriately to individual needs.
  • To gather/report information from/to parents/carers as directed.
  • Support with the development, implementation and review of Student Support Plans (SSPs).
  • Share strategies with Teachers and Teaching Assistants for supporting pupils with SEND and subject specific needs.

The successful candidate will have experience of supporting young learners in an organisational setting, along with an understanding of individual learning styles and the ability to identify potential barriers to learning, engaging in strategies and coaching skills to overcome these barriers. As this is a specialist role focussing on Maths, you will also require a GCSE level (or equivalent) grade B or above in Maths, along with a GCSE level (or equivalent) grade C or above in English.

Leeds West is a co-educational, non-denominational 11-16 secondary in the city’s district of Bramley. The school is a member of the White Rose Academies Trust. There are currently approximately 1,300 students on the school roll. The school is located near Summerfield Primary School and Stanningley Park. The school offers an extensive programme of extra-curricular activities from martial arts to chess. The school is also sponsored by Leeds City College.
