Job overview

The University of Kent Academies Trust is seeking to recruit a proactive Speech and Language Therapist to work across both Brompton Academy and Chatham Grammar. The post is suitable for either an experienced or newly qualified practitioner, as there could be on-site supervision through the preceptorship from the Lead Speech and Language Therapist.

The role involves working within our current inclusion team to deliver a specialist integrated speech, language and communication service to secondary-aged SEND students. The SLT would work jointly with and be supported by the Lead SLT/Therapy Lead as part of this role, which is a flexible, part-time role, 3 days (22.5 hours) per week, term time only. The salary for this role is equivalent to the upper end of NHS band 6 and the lower end of Band 7.

The role of the SLT is vital for a significant number of our students, particularly for those students with EHCPs and/or underlying SLCN in mainstream and in our specialist provision, the Eliot Centre, which is based at Brompton Academy. Working with the Therapy Lead, you will have the opportunity to develop special areas of interest in SLCN and will be supported to access suitable CPD to develop your role.

We are looking for a vibrant and energetic individual who wants to make a difference to the lives of our students and who will engage with working as part of a highly committed and effective team. You will need to be confident, resilient, approachable and a good communicator as you will be required to liaise with students, staff, parents/carers and outside agencies. The successful candidate will be expected to work with students from upper Key Stage 2 to Key Stage 5, and to support and provide training to empower our staff to integrate specialist interventions and techniques into the classroom.

The successful applicant will be coming to a multi-academy trust-wide supportive learning environment characterised by open management, and in the knowledge that they will enjoy the full support and care of the pragmatic (and down-to-earth) leadership team. We have a dynamic, innovative team of professional staff who want to make a difference to the lives, aspirations and opportunities of our young people. We would encourage applicants to visit the UKAT website to view the many employee benefits on offer: https://www.universityofkentacademiestrust.org.uk/careers-with-ukat

HOW TO APPLY

In order to follow social distancing guidance, visits to the Academy are not possible at this time, but we would be happy to arrange a discussion or video call with a member of our Senior Leadership Team to share our vision for this role with you. To arrange such a discussion, or for any other queries about the role, please email recruitment@universityofkentacademiestrust.org.uk

Where is Brompton Academy?

Set within the Garden of England, Brompton Academy is located adjacent to the Great Lines Heritage Park, which are Medway's most prominent green spaces with over 70 hectares of open space.  The location of the Academy provides excellent transport links by rail to London (with the option of a high-speed service) and its main airports and is less than an hour from the main channel ports giving easy access to mainland Europe.  Gillingham railway station is just a 10-15 minute walk away.  The Academy also has excellent transport links by road from the M2/A2 (and has free car parking!).

Within close proximity of the Academy, there are a wide range of leisure and cultural activities.  Just five minutes by car brings you to Historic Dockyard Chatham, one of Britain’s leading maritime heritage destinations where you can explore galleries and museums and enjoy a multitude of festivals and events throughout the year.  The Dockside Outlet centre sports over 40 great retailers if you are interested in some retail therapy, restaurants, bars, coffee shops, gyms, hotels and a newly built Odeon Cinema.

The local area boasts great sporting facilities and the nearby Medway Park (5 minute walk) is an established sports centre with three indoor swimming pools, gym, fitness centre, sports hall and squash courts.  Our Lead Sponsor, the University of Kent also offers a professional Sports Therapy Clinic at Medway Park and offers discounted rates to any BA staff.

For those that might be interested in discovering a bit more about the local area we are very fortunate to have some beautiful landmarks close by and would encourage you to visit the historical town of Rochester, home of Charles Dickens where you will find museums, stunning historic buildings including the 800+ year old Rochester Castle and Rochester Cathedral together with a wide range of hotels and restaurants, bars, tea shops and a buzzing night life.  Or you might want to visit the more rural and quiet tranquil river village of Upnor where you will find Upnor Castle located on the west bank of the River Medway in Kent.

The location of the Academy also provides a wide range of housing options, so whether you are an NQT or an experienced teacher, looking for your first property, moving up the property ladder or relocating to the area, there is a varied selection of properties to suit your needs.  We would be happy to assist you in providing useful information and contacts if you are looking to relocate to the area.

With all of this so close to the Academy, there really is a lot on offer for working at Brompton Academy.

See for yourself and come and visit us if you are interested in joining us!
