Job overview

We are seeking to employ four Sports Interns for the 2019-20 Academic Year to contribute to our sports, physical education and boarding programs. An Intern placement year in the sports department of Millfield Prep School will provide an unrivalled opportunity to work at one of the UK’s leading Prep Schools.

Millfield Prep School (MPS) is an independent co-educational school with outstanding sports facilities and situated by the famous Glastonbury Tor. There are 400 children ranging in age from 2 – 13yrs, with about a third of these children boarding. We have outstanding facilities and a vibrant multisport environment.

Sports Interns will have the opportunity to develop some of the knowledge and skills gained previously either from schooling or from an Undergraduate degree. Successful candidates should be confident, reliable and have good interpersonal skills as well as showing a willingness to be involved in all areas of school life. An ability to coach rugby, hockey, cricket, netball, tennis, football or swimming would be an advantage.

We are seeking interns to be involved in coaching sports teams, assisting during Physical Education lessons, and contributing to the athletic development of our talented sports players. Interns also have an option of getting involved with other areas of the school. For example, the Pre Prep Department, boarding, or any academic department which would be beneficial to students wishing to pursue a PGCE or undergraduate studies.

The posts run for a full academic year from September through June, with breaks for School holidays. Remuneration is £9,217 per annum including holiday pay, plus board and lodging during term time and a contribution towards professional development (e.g. coaching course). In addition to contributing to the above areas, interns will gain experience in boarding houses and help supervise recreation times.

Candidates should either be enrolled in or recently graduated from Sports Science, Sports Coaching or similar degrees. Applicants will have participated regularly to a good standard and ideally hold coaching qualifications in relevant activities.

Millfield Prep offers an exceptional, all-round educational experience that puts the individual at the centre, in order to develop and discover their brilliance. Nestled in the beautiful Somerset countryside, Millfield Prep is an independent, co-educational day and boarding school for pupils aged 2-13, founded in 1945. We provide the ideal environment in which to grow up, foster a love of learning and create lifelong childhood memories. We pride ourselves on providing an exceptional, all-round education where every child can discover their brilliance. Our fundamental belief is that every child is unique and that they all have their own special talents which they enjoy and excel at and which we celebrate.

The school’s facilities are unrivalled and our teaching provision immerses pupils in limitless opportunities so that wherever their passions lie, they will excel in academics, arts, music and sport, all in one place. Our focus is teaching pupils a broad, balanced and individually tailored programme, with academically challenging opportunities for our most able and support for those who need it. We promote confidence, health and wellbeing through involvement in sport and physical activity. We have around 150 full time boarders, many of whom are UK-based children but also children from 27 other nationalities, living in 5 boarding houses, and 250 day pupils.

We believe that all our pupils are brilliant at something and it is our job to help them find what that is. They gain a real sense of achievement from the variety of co-curricular activities on offer, the wide range of clubs include Kit Car Club, Programming & Coding Club to Soft-Toy Making and Skateboarding. Millfield Prep’s outstanding facilities across 200 acres, allow pupils to excel. Whether it’s swimming in our 25-metre indoor swimming pool, playing golf on our 9- or 18-hole golf courses, playing on our numerous sports pitches or horse riding in our fantastic equestrian centre which features over 120 acres of hacking trails and a British Eventing (BE) cross-country course.

The teaching staff at MPS are hugely committed and, in turn, the School supports them fully in their own professional development. A warm, friendly staff room that embodies a positive, can-do attitude makes MPS a fantastic place to work.
