Job overview

For September 2022, the Headmaster and Governors of Colston’s School seek to appoint Sports Assistants at the Upper School and Lower School. The successful candidates will be dynamic, positive and driven individuals, with plans to enter teaching or coaching in the future. This is an excellent opportunity during or after university for an individual looking to gain experience before following a possible career in teaching or sports coaching. The main focus for sport within the school is rugby, netball, hockey, cricket and strength & conditioning.

The Upper School (11-18yrs) role will include general teaching support duties in the PE and Sports departments, coaching a selection of the school’s major sports (rugby, hockey, netball, tennis, and cricket), supporting our S&C programme and some administrative tasks. Some support of Lower School Games may also be included. There are no evening boarding duties associated with this role but support of weekend fixtures will be essential.

The Lower School role combines sports coaching at both the Upper and Lower School with the opportunity to improve understanding of classroom practice as a Teaching Assistant with primary-aged children. Lower School Sports Assistants also help with activities such as swimming in Pre-Prep and a variety of residential trips in the summer term. Support of weekend fixtures for the Upper school will also be essential.

Colston’s is a thriving co-educational day school on the outskirts of Bristol that has a tradition of helping individuals and teams reach the highest levels of sporting achievement whilst encouraging participation and competition at all levels of ability. The School is easily accessible from the motorway network with approximately 800 students aged from 3 to 18. The Upper School occupies a glorious thirty acre campus and has all of its facilities on-site.

In addition to the above, the following would be desirable but would not preclude employment:

  • Experience of coaching children of a variety of ages in different settings.
  • Evidence of the drive to become a teacher or a sports coach.
  • Evidence of sporting achievements in a chosen field or fields.

This post is full time during term time with some additional commitments for weekend fixtures, starting on Tuesday 30th August 2022 and is expected to last until, Friday 7th July, the end of the Summer Term 2023. You will be paid monthly for your contract across the school year and accommodation on site is included with the position.

We offer a range of benefits with this role:

• Free accommodation on site

• Free school lunches during term time

• Free access to the Fitness Suite and sports facilities at evenings and weekends

• Overtime available for some weekend fixtures

• Free Colston’s staff sports kit

• Access to sports staff inset and teacher development inset during the school year

• Support for applications to university with access to the PGCE induction programme

• Support for applications to job applications for beyond Colston’s

• A lively, busy and fun sporting environment

Within the supporting statement of your application please be clear on why you would wish to join Colston’s, what experience you have to date and what level of sports coaching you can offer (especially in regards to the main school sports). Please also include any interest or experience of other school co-curricular activities.

We reserve the right to invite candidates for interview prior to the closing date where we have sufficient suitable applications. Therefore, we encourage interested applicants to submit an application as soon as possible.

The closing date for applications is Wednesday 1st December 2021.

Interviews will take place during week commencing Monday 6th December 2021.
