Position Title: Student Support Worker
Accountable to: Principal
Accountable to National School Chaplaincy Program
Purpose / Scope of Position:
The role of the Student Support Worker is to:
● Provide support for the holistic wellbeing of students, including guidance about ethics, values, relationships and spirituality.
● Help to foster positive key interpersonal relationships within the school (including student-staff, student-student, and home-staff).
● Support the school’s implementation of DLCSL Pastoral Care Domain
● Create opportunities for the social and emotional development of students.
● Enhance student engagement with the parish and broader community.
● Support pastoral care initiatives as requested.
Statement of Responsibility:
The role is responsible to the principal. The role must be consistent with the National School Chaplaincy Program Guidelines 2020 – 2022.
The role and responsibilities could include:
● Supports students in their understanding of the values of the school
● Works closely with, and/or as part of the school Leadership Team and Wellbeing Team to support student resilience and wellbeing services
● Provides support to students in a mentoring role
● Implements activities such as lunch clubs which provide students with an opportunity to promote student voice and agency
● Supports students and staff to create an environment which promotes the physical, emotional, social, spiritual and intellectual development and wellbeing of students
● Ensures weekly records of activities and hours worked are maintained
● Undertakes other reasonable and relevant duties as directed by the Principal
● Demonstrate Christian values when engaging with children, parents, staff and the general public.
● Demonstrate the ability to perform the role as outlined by the National School Chaplaincy Program.
● Have an understanding of childhood development and the issues pertinent to children/young people.
● Have the confidence, ability and experience to communicate and work with children/young people.
● Implement a student focused approach when working with key stakeholders.
● Demonstrate the ability to work consistently and positively within a team.
● Ensure that timely records are maintained on the service provided to the school.
Authority is delegated from the Principal for the Student Support Worker to undertake this role within the school. Such authorisation is clearly articulated in the school based Duty Statement, and should be negotiated annually as part of the performance management process.
Expenditure of funds must be in accordance with approved budgets and appropriately authorised, and be consistent with School Chaplain Guidelines.
Student Support Workers appointed under the NSCP must meet the conditions of the Program which are set out in the Agreement with the Commonwealth.
a) participation by students is voluntary
b) chaplains* may be from any faith
c) chaplains* must:
i. not proselytise
ii. respect, accept and be sensitive to other people’s views, values and beliefs
iii. comply with the Child Protection (Working with Children) Act 2012 (NSW) and all related laws concerning child protection
iv. have regard to the National Framework for Protecting Australia’s Children, and any relevant NSW responses to the recommendations from the Royal
Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Abuse (Volume 6 – Making institutions child safe, Volume 10 – Children with harmful sexual behaviours and Volume 13 – Schools)
v. have a relevant and valid NSW Working With Children Check
vi. meet the NSCP’s minimum qualification requirements (a Certificate IV in Youth Work or Pastoral Care or equivalent, which must include competencies or equivalent in ‘mental health’ and ‘making appropriate referrals’)
vii. complete free professional learning in responding to and preventing bullying and cyberbullying provided by the Office of the eSafety Commissioner within 18 months from the time it is first available.
