Job overview

We are looking to appoint an enthusiastic Student Welfare Coordinator to this Outstanding and World Class University Technical College (UTC). We are a ‘world-class’ school, a Centre of excellence in Computer Science and Engineering education for young people aged 14 to 19 who are committed to succeed in these areas. Supported by national and international organisation such as Microsoft, Cisco, Stantec and Network Rail, we develop students known for having the skills, knowledge, attitude, and behaviour sought by leading employers in the Engineering and Computing sectors.

This new student welfare coordinator will make a team of two students welfare coordinators that will work closely with the wider pastoral and SEN support teams to support students across all four year groups (10-13). Young people of today have many opportunities in front of them to make a great start in their adult life. With these opportunities comes a number of challenges. We know that great attendance to school and lessons with access to great teachers and positive relationships with adults have profound and long lasting impact on young people.  This new student welfare coordinator will work with a wide variety of students but likely some of the most vulnerable but in doing so, you will be joining a hardworking and committed team that supports genuine transformation in students through a variety of learning experiences to ensure our students are prepared for the world of work in the computing and engineering industries. Achieving excellent results for your students, instilling in them a love for the subject and a desire to learn.  We are looking for someone who will inspire and enthuse our students and will support the delivery of an outstanding and enriched curriculum and an overall positive educational experience.

The UTC opened in September 2013 in a newly refurbished building which replicates a business environment with state-of–the-art facilities and was judged by Ofsted as Outstanding in every category in May 2015 in only its second year of operation. This is not only a relatively new school but a new approach to educating 14–19-year-olds, which is possibly the most exciting change in the education landscape in decades.

All students at UTC Reading specialise in either Engineering, Computing or STEM; at KS4 they also study a focused and responsive curriculum to these specialisms. At Post 16 the curriculum becomes more specialist where students can study one of three routes: Technical, Hybrid, or A Level. In the technical route they will either study a Level 3 Extended Diploma in Engineering or Computing. In the Hybrid Route, they will study a technical qualification in engineering or computing alongside two A Levels. In the A Level route they will study 3 A Levels. At capacity we will be educating 500-550 students who will all have a passion for Engineering or Computer Science; it is a truly inspirational environment.

This role will provide you with:

• unparalleled professional development including access to a full suite of professional qualifications including MOS, MTA and AutoDesk

• focussed teaching - only teaching KS4 and KS5 classes

• small class sizes

• passionate students

• opportunities for career development

• An opportunity to be at the forefront of STEM education

If you believe that this is an environment where you can thrive, develop and substantially contribute to an exciting future for UTC Reading then you are encouraged to explore further by contacting the Director of SEN, Georgina Craven, via jessica.bryant@utcreading.org.uk for a more detailed discussion, if required.

Completed application forms and an accompanying supporting letter should be emailed no later than midday on Friday 10th December 2021 to: jessica.bryant@utcreading.org.uk

We are an equal opportunities employer and are committed to the safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children. The successful candidate will be subject to an enhanced DBS check.

Values and Vision

University technical colleges are a new type of school in which the curriculum is geared heavily towards employability and skills. UTC Reading is heavily focused on engineering and computer science, providing a high-quality curriculum in co-operation with industry partners. The school works closely with a number of external bodies such as the University of Reading, Microsoft and Network Rail. This is intended to ensure that students are able to maximise their employability and relevance in the modern workplace. Although engineering and computer science are the main focuses of the school, UTC Reading does still offer a strong wider curriculum with subjects such as humanities and languages.
