Job overview

Student Welfare Officer

Start date: 30 August 2022| Salary: £27,849

Full time |Term time only| Maternity cover (one year)

We are seeking to appoint a Student Welfare Officer to start at the end of August 2022. This is a one-year, fixed-term maternity contract.

The Student Welfare Officer role is stimulating and varied, focused on supporting students aged 16-19 with many different challenges. You will support students, be part of the College’s Safeguarding Team and work in close liaison with Pastoral Managers and the Student Counsellor. Every student’s circumstances are unique but many come to the Welfare Officer for similar reasons, such as mental health difficulties, family pressures, domestic violence, housing issues or to seek advice about benefits. Sometimes students will only see the Student Welfare Officer once or twice and, in other cases, they may have ongoing contact over a period of years, especially if they are used to being supported by a professional network, for example, as a Looked After Child.

You must be familiar with safeguarding issues and child protection procedures and have had experience of working with young people aged 16-19 from diverse cultural backgrounds in an educational or similar setting. You must be educated to at least degree level and have strong written and verbal communication skills.  An understanding of young persons’ housing and benefit rights would be an advantage.

St Francis Xavier is a dynamic and ambitious Sixth Form College. We thrive on our many engagements and connections with higher education, with employers and with external agencies and we relish the challenge of working out how best to equip our young people to compete and flourish in the future. Rated “Good” by Ofsted, the College achieves excellent standards and is proud to support many young people from non-traditional backgrounds to successful progression to higher education and to employment.  Currently, it is embarking upon a journey to achieve one of the first awards of “Apple Distinguished” status for its digital innovation practice in teaching, learning and assessment. We strive to ensure that we take care of and support the development of the whole person: educational, emotional, social and spiritual.

This is a maternity, fixed term contract, 35 hours per week over 5 days per week, term time only (38 weeks per year). Your salary will be paid on NJC scale 17 - actual £27,849 per annum inclusive of London Weighting (FTE 31,705).

As well as a competitive salary, we offer a supportive and friendly environment and a great range of benefits including excellent training opportunities, staff wellbeing programme, free use of our fitness suite and staff fitness classes, cycle to work scheme, on site free parking, membership of the Local Government Pension Scheme, and Employee Assistance Programme to name a few.

The college is supported by strong professional relationships within the London Catholic Sixth Form Colleges (LoCVIC) partnership and the London Sixth Form Colleges (LSFC) partnership; which support formal and informal staff development and offers opportunities for teachers, support staff, managers and leaders across the partnerships to meet and develop, such as attending conferences, learning hubs and observe colleagues at the other colleges. There are dedicated, planned developmental opportunities for newly qualified teachers via LSFC and within St. Francis Xavier Sixth Form College. A full year long induction programme is followed by NQTs and includes topics such as safeguarding, equality & diversity, behaviour for learning, assessment for learning strategies, use of data to drive progress, and skills exchanges.
