Job overview

Subject Leader for Business and Economics.

Tes is currently supporting a friendly and supportive independent school, based in Settle, North Yorkshire. The school is looking to add a Subject Leader for Business and Economics to their progressive and supportive Department ideally starting in January 2022.

The role will include managing the delivery of Business Studies and Economics at GCSE and A-level across year groups 10 to 13. You will lead your department to enhance provision and will get the chance to lead on exciting project work throughout the year. Project work may include revising schemes of work and ensuring the curriculum is engaging to all learners alongside projects that support student attainment, well-being and engagement within the wider school. However, as Head of Department you will have full autonomy to ensure your department meets targets and exceeds needs of our learners. You will lead by example, supporting and empowering your department’s teachers, staff and pupils to achieve to the best of their ability.

“The Business Education Department currently has three teachers who deliver A levels in Edexcel Economics and Business plus the level 3 BTEC diploma in Business which is equivalent to two A levels. Both Economics and Business are popular A level subjects and attract 12+ pupils per year. In recent years we have enjoyed some excellent results in Economics where we have achieved over 80% A*-B. The successful candidate will have the passion and expertise to deliver first-class teaching which will ensure all pupils make excellent progress. This is an excellent opportunity for the right candidate who can bring energy, excitement and innovation to the classroom.   The role will also offer an opportunity for the candidate to develop their skills in other areas of the department depending on their skills and previous experience.

With 340 pupils aged 11 to 18, the Senior School is large enough to offer a wide variety of teaching and learning across a six-day week, but small enough to offer close tutorial support, small classes, and opportunities for everyone to get into teams or to take part in music, art, drama, outdoor pursuits and all the other activities we offer. Our academic standards are high across a broad curriculum and we embrace a breadth of ability, supporting each child to achieve their personal best. At the school, success is not just about grades and academic skills. We put an equal emphasis on personal development, helping young people to build confidence, resilience and independence, and to take responsibility and initiative. The School has seven boarding houses, each with Senior House Staff, Matrons, and a full team of Tutors. As a modern boarding and day school we offer a wide range of options tailored to fit the needs, lifestyles and budgets of families based locally, nationally and internationally. Students can choose to be a day pupil, a full boarder, 3 or 5-night flexi boarder or board occasionally if there is an activity in school that’s not to be missed."

The school is offering:

• A super supportive and highly visible SLT team and Headteacher;

• on-going CPD with programmes of study such as NPQSL and MA in Educational Leadership

• progression support throughout the school and wider group

• support package for NQT’s/RQT’s including CPD and NQT mentorship;

• the chance to take on further responsibility such as Leadership roles in the future.

The school expects:

• A UK teaching qualification such as PGCE/PGDE, SCITT, BEd or MEd with Qualified Teacher Status (QTS)

• a relevant Business Studies and Economics Degree or a related subject

• experience of delivering Business Studies and Economics up to A-level pushing and engaging learners to progress within the subject

• experience managing a department: specifically people and departmental management

• a love and passion for education.
