This is an exciting opportunity to lead and develop Media Studies at Bourne Grammar School. We are looking for an experienced and inspirational teacher to teach A-Level Media Studies. Although previous Subject Leader experience is not necessarily required, the successful candidate will need to be able to demonstrate the ability to lead and develop this recently established Sixth Form subject.

Bourne Grammar School

We are an outstanding and oversubscribed mixed selective school serving Bourne, Stamford and Peterborough. There are currently 1,579 students on roll including 374 in our Sixth Form. Our students are well-behaved and motivated and are taught in modern and well-resourced facilities. Jonathan Maddox, the Headteacher, has been in post for over 13 years and under his leadership, the school has expanded to become one of the largest grammar schools in the country. The school offers 240 places in Year 7. The vast majority of Year 11 students transfer into our Sixth Form where students are offered a choice of 27 A-Level subjects.

The best atmosphere, the best support, the best results

This is our purpose statement - we have no long or complicated mission statement. The order of the purpose statement is deliberate; we believe that if we get the atmosphere and support right then, given our able students and committed staff, good results will follow. The atmosphere is special and cherished by us all and something that interview candidates often remark upon.

We are a large and busy school and our students are well-behaved, motivated and want to be here and their parents/carers want them to be here. Most of the students, most of the time, want to learn and enjoy lessons which are well-planned, well-taught and engaging.

The Media Studies Department

Media Studies A-Level was introduced in September 2016 to meet the needs of an expanding Sixth Form. It proved to be an immediate and popular choice with a considerable number of students choosing Media Studies as one of their three A-level subjects. The first A-Level results in 2018 were encouraging: A*-B grade achievement was 42% and all students achieved grade D or above. The AQA A-Level syllabus is currently followed but the successful candidate will have the freedom to review and change the exam board if required.

The Media Studies teaching rooms are located together and adjacent to the English department. A generous curriculum budget supports the delivery of well-resourced and rich lessons. Opportunities offered to students outside of the curriculum including subject-related trips are encouraged.

The role

The role will suit a subject-specialist with experience of teaching Media Studies to A-Level. Subject knowledge is a pre-requisite but the ability to inspire and enthuse students about Media Studies and a potential career in Media, is also key. The ability to offer English and or Art at KS3 or higher would be useful.

Working at Bourne Grammar School

The teaching staff body numbers around 90 teachers supported by 40 non-teaching colleagues. All teaching staff are subject specialists. Staff absence is very low as is staff turnover. Staff who do leave often do so for promoted posts.

All teaching staff at Bourne Grammar School are issued with a high-quality laptop and other benefits include a Childcare Voucher scheme and free on-site parking.

Bourne is a pleasant, semi-rural and expanding town in South Lincolnshire. It is surrounding by beautiful villages and countryside and yet has easy access to Peterborough, Cambridge, London and the motorway network. London Kings Cross is a 52 minute train journey from Peterborough. Lincolnshire and its neighbouring counties offer a wide range of housing considerably below the national average house price cost. Primary school provision and facilities for families are excellent.

If you would like to apply for this role, please complete an application form and send to recruitment@bourne-grammar.lincs.sch.uk by Friday 22 February 2019. If you would like further information regarding the role, the department or the school, please contact Mrs Jane Gray, Director of Business & Development, for an informal chat or visit. Her contact details are 01778 422288 ext. 218 or recruitment@bourne-grammar.lincs.sch.uk.

We are committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and expect all who work here to share this commitment. The successful applicant will be subject to an enhanced DBS disclosure and satisfactory references.
