Required for September 2018, a well-qualified and dynamic Subject Leader to join and lead a progressive, effective and high-achieving English department in this high performing and outstanding school; attainment is in the top 10 % of schools nationally. Salary will be highly competitive and commensurate with the candidate’s experience. There may also be the opportunity for a secondment onto the SLT for the right candidate. St Mary’s is one of a select group of schools which achieved outstanding grades in our last OFSTED and in more our recent January 2018 School Inspection. Inspectors commented “The school’s motto ‘achieving excellence for all’ has become a reality at this outstanding school”. The successful candidate will enjoy coming to a school in which our latest survey showed 100% of parents would recommend the school, 100% of students enjoy school, and 98% of staff enjoy their work.

We have also been awarded DfE PSBP Status and are already benefitting from the early completion of the first part of over £5million worth of refurbishment and building development. English is an outstanding and highly efficient department at the school with well-established and successful courses at all levels. We enjoy a history of outstanding results at GCSE, and are regularly ranked in the top 10% nationally. We enjoy high recruitment numbers for A-level English Language and Literature and we are particularly proud that our A-Level English Language progress figures are currently in the top 3% of schools nationally.

In 1896, five Sisters from the Belgian congregation of St Mary of Namur came to Bishop's Stortford and established a school with just 9 students.  These pioneering Sisters were the first to provide Catholic education for the district, and the school rapidly became a success. Their legacy is St Mary’s Catholic School, and as we look to the future with high expectations for continued success, their vision continues to inspire us. This is expressed in our aspiration towards academic excellence founded on Gospel values. In practical terms this also means the best possible pastoral care and guidance and the challenge and support of a broad range of spiritual opportunities which permeate through all aspects of school life.
