Job overview

Lord Lawson of Beamish Academy is seeking to appoint a dynamic and dedicated Subject Leader for Religious Education (RE). Our vision for the curriculum at Lord Lawson is that, through its breadth and balance, it provides pupils of every age and ability the opportunities to acquire and enjoy using knowledge, as well as space to develop as individuals.  Curriculum changes, planned and implemented well before the present health crisis, have strengthened the position of RE within the curriculum at Lord Lawson. The post of Subject Leader for RE is being revived, and has the status of Assistant Subject Leader within an already strong Faculty of Humanities, and this provides an opportunity for a creative and energetic subject specialist to develop their career and put their own stamp on a subject that is recognised within the school as increasingly important.

RE is an important subject at Lord Lawson of Beamish Academy. All pupils study RE at Key Stage 3 and it is increasingly popular at Key Stage 4. GCSE Religious Studies was reintroduced in 2017 and numbers have increased since then; next year there will be three groups in Year 10  taking GCSE RE. Feedback from pupils about the subject is also very positive. Examination results in 2019 were strong, particularly considering this was the first cohort to sit the exam for some years. The syllabus followed at Key Stage 4 is AQA: Christianity and Sikhism. Pupils also study the themes of peace and conflict, human rights and social justice, crime and punishments, and religion and life.

Should you experience any difficulties with this application, please contact Mrs Linda Alder on 07841 162746 for assistance.

Lord Lawson of Beamish Academy is a successful 11-18 mainstream co-educational academy which has improved rapidly over recent years. We recently celebrated achieving a ‘Good’ Ofsted rating in our November 2022 inspection. The improvement in progress 8 scores from 2019 to 2022 indicates we are the most improved school in Gateshead and among the top 10% of schools for improvement in the North East of England.

We provide an exceptional programme of CPD for staff. We know this through staff surveys and our exceptionally low levels of staff turnover. The majority of staff who have left us have gone on to promoted positions. Staff are happy here; Lord Lawson of Beamish Academy is a good place to work. We have high expectations of our staff and students, but we also know our staff are our greatest asset, and we treat them with respect. We value the development of all our staff and you will develop further as a teacher during your time here.

Our next steps are to build on our recent achievements, and to improve the attainment and progress of our disadvantaged students, including those with SEND. We also want to engage more effectively with our community, and continue to expand our already thriving extra-curricular offer for our students. Alongside these aims, we aim to expand our sixth form further, by attracting applications from other local schools, as well as ensuring more of our students complete key stage 4 with the qualifications required for further academic study.

We are an academy at the heart of its community and responsive to its needs while also recognising that our students are increasingly part of a global community.
