  • Innovative use of IT to promote learning embedded as a regular part of normal teaching.

The Curriculum Area of Computer Science

There are currently five specialist teachers in the Computer Science department (some full time and some part time) teaching a cohort of over 200 students.  We share a small and friendly office with staff who teach ICT.  We teach the OCR A level specification, 20% of which is a substantial programming project started in the first year of the two year course.  We teach programming fundamentals with Java and students also learn JavaScript and HTML (HTML, CSS and JavaScript are used to create the GUI for projects).  You do not need to already have these skills but you must have an enthusiasm, capacity and willingness to learn them.  The department has excellent resources and facilities, including interactive whiteboards and well maintained networked computers in all teaching rooms.

This role allows you to focus on teaching the subject you are enthusiastic about, to fantastic young people who have chosen the subject and are motivated to learn.  You will have the opportunity to enhance the curriculum in ways that benefit students and interest you, for example through extra curricular activities, as well as developing your skills and teaching practice supported by effective and dynamic leadership.  You will be part of a team which strives for continual improvement in teaching and learning, student experience and student attainment.

How do we support you?

As a new member of staff you will receive plenty of support from your colleagues both from the department and from the wider college community.  This will include:

  • a mentor to help you through the first year (in particular);
  • support from your curriculum manager and director of faculty; and
  • an extensive programme for all new staff to help induct you into College life as well as to develop your approach to teaching

For graduates we will organise and fund a teaching qualification – usually a PGCE – a saving for most graduates of at least £9,000. In addition we offer Qualified Teacher Status (i.e. completion of the statutory induction period) through Hampshire Local Authority and in partnership with one of our local schools.

We regard our staff as our most important resource and will do our utmost to support you throughout your time at the College.

Why should you join us?
