About The British School of Amsterdam

The British School of Amsterdam is a leading international school in Amsterdam, providing world-class learning for children aged from 3 to 18 years. We follow an enhanced version of the National Curriculum for England including GCSE and A Level programmes, and currently have over 1,000 pupils enrolled across three school sections: Early Years School (3-6 years), Junior School (6-11 years) and Senior School (12-18 years). Our school's greatest asset is our Staff and, as a team, we are committed to providing the best possible education for the children in our care.

The role of Supply Cover Supervisor (Senior School)

We are seeking professional individuals to join our team of Supply Supervisors, providing adult supervision in Senior School classrooms (students 12-18 years) during periods of planned and unplanned teacher absences. Short notice availability to work during the school week is required. The Supply Cover Supervisor is appointed as a classroom supervisor when regular teachers are away, usually for periods of short-term absence. The role involves carrying out pre-prepared classroom activities and exercises set by the regular teacher; it is not a teaching role. Candidates should ideally have gained some experience of interacting with teenage/young adult students in a relevant setting; possible experience could include exam invigilator, tutor, teacher aide, teacher, learning support, counsellor, club leader, parent volunteer, or similar. Calm, confident leadership is required to manage and guide student groups in a classroom setting. Flexibility and availability to work on a part-time basis, sometimes at short notice, is required.

IMPORTANT: We can only consider candidates with the legal right to work in The Netherlands. Candidates should already live in or near Amsterdam and be within commuting distance of the school.

Main purpose of the role:

  • Supervise pupils carrying out pre-prepared exercises when teaching staff are on short-term absence
  • Manage a classroom, ensuring a safe and secure environment and that pupils remain on task with the work they have been set
  • To flexibly provide administration and support in other areas where cover capacity allows

Duties include:

  • To be solely responsible for a class of pupils in the absence of the Teacher, ensuring they are engaged in learning activities pre-set by the Teacher
  • Managing the behaviour of pupils while they undertake pre-set school work, ensuring a calm and constructive classroom environment is maintained
  • Responding to any questions from pupils about process and procedure
  • Dealing with immediate problems or emergencies, as required
  • Liaising with teachers or other staff regarding work set for a class, to effectively supervise the lesson
  • Collecting any completed work and returning to the appropriate teacher or subject leader
  • Reporting on behaviour of pupils during the class, and any issues arising, using the school's agreed referral procedures
  • Taking registers of pupils in attendance
  • Supervision of pupils during breaks and at lunchtimes, as required
  • Supporting the work of classroom teachers or general school administration when not actively deployed to cover a class
  • Supporting/contributing to the development of an ''activity bank'' of resources
  • Supporting/contributing to the creation and maintenance of classroom displays
  • Invigilating internal / external examinations, as requested
  • Acting as First Aider as required (training provided and extra allowance payable)
  • Undertaking other tasks/duties as directed, commensurate with the responsibilities of the Cover Supervisor

Preferred qualifications, skills & experience:

  • University degree or post graduate qualifications preferred
  • Experience working/interacting with students aged 12-18 in a relevant capacity
  • Experience working in a school environment preferred
  • Experience working closely with children aged 12-18 years
  • Experience in / of an International School
  • Experience of the British national curriculum
  • Excellent English language skills (verbal & written)
  • Effective communication & interpersonal skills
  • Strong organisation skills
  • Leadership skills

Personal qualities:

  • Enjoys working with young people
  • Positive, personable and good-humoured
  • Works well in a structured, procedural work environment
  • Flexible, adaptable and co-operative in approach

Applications Process

Candidates should use the TES application process. Applications should include a covering letter, addressed to the Principal, Ruth Sanderson and the contact details for two referees. There is no closing date as there can be a requirement for Supply Cover Supervisors throughout the school year.

Safeguarding

The School is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and expects all staff and volunteers to share in this commitment. The offer of the role will be made subject to receipt of satisfactory references, proof of relevant qualifications, identification checks and other safeguarding checks, and overseas checks (where appropriate).
