Job overview

We are looking for an enthusiastic, motivated individual to join our team as Support Staff / Teaching Assistant. 


Our setting is a small, trauma-informed setting working with children with SEN/SEMH, and who may display challenging behaviour. Our Support Staff are required to support teaching staff on 2:1 ratio, or will be allocated their own students and required to provide sessions and interventions.


Roles and Responsibilities

● To work as part of the team to provide vulnerable learners with high-quality alternative education primarily as support to a teacher, and on occasion as an intervention on a 1:1 basis

● To receive direction from the teaching staff and Teaching Assistant Lead and deliver as required

● To plan, deliver, and report on intervention, including on-the-spot when necessary, to support our vulnerable learners.

● To develop and maintain positive relationships with young people and their families

● To keep the teaching spaces clean and tidy, well-resourced, and conducive to learnings

● To ensure classroom and wall displays are kept tidy and up to dates

● To abide by risk assessments for children in your care, including ensuring teaching areas are kept clean and tidy and any resources are kept locked aways

● To demonstrate patience and calm even during times of challenging behaviour

● To liaise with schools and other external agencies if appropriate

● To immediately inform management of any safeguarding or health and safety issues

● To foster supportive and trusting relationships with the children, parents/guardians, schools, and any other involved agencies

● To ensure confidentiality is respected at all times

● To follow all policy and procedure.


Who are we looking for?

The staff member will:

  • Have a minimum of 1 year experience working with children or families with SEN or challenging behaviours
  • Consider safeguarding an utmost priority and an ability to deal with safeguarding incidents swiftly and confidently
  • Be an excellent team player and actively promote a team ethos 
  • Have an understanding of the social and emotional issues which may face our students, and use trauma-informed strategies when delivering 
  • Follow our behaviour policy, and be capable of setting expectations and boundaries
  • Develop positive relationships with students based on our ethos of ‘connection before correction’
  • Promote equality and diversity
  • Develop good working relationships with colleagues
  • Liaise with leadership team as appropriate to promote overall positive centre mental health and wellbeing

Working days: Monday- Friday term time only plus 3 days during school holidays

Working hours:  

30 hours per week

The core hours of the business are 8am – 6pm. We require all staff to be in-centre for a minimum of the hours of 9am-3pm plus required training or meetings, but the additional duties can be completed throughout the core hours.


Please note: This role involves working directly with children who may display challenging behaviour. Confidence in behaviour management is a requirement of this role.
