Reporting to the Deputy Head (Pastoral) the role of the Supportive Listener is to provide a professional and effective counselling and assessment service to pupils at Mount St Mary’s College, in line with the Ethical Framework for the Counselling Professions, recommended by the British Association for Counsellors and Psychotherapists (BACP). Alongside facilitating sessions with pupils this will include liaising with school staff to ensure an effective referral service, accurate record keeping whilst ensuring confidentiality and data protection are maintained at all times and promotion of the service through various methods throughout the school.

The successful candidate will possess a qualification at diploma level or equivalent, recognised by the British Association of Counsellors and Psychotherapists (BACP). Previous experience of providing a counselling service to young people is essential including excellent communications skills, particularly on a one to one basis. A non-judgemental outlook is a must in this role alongside an understanding of the learning environment and the key issues faced by young people. The ability to be self-managing and to prioritise workload effectively is also a key requirement.

We are keen to hear from candidates with proven experience in a similar role, preferably in an educational environment. The position is offered on a fixed term basis to cover the maternity leave of our current Supportive Listener.

Mount St Mary’s College is an HMC independent day and boarding school for boys and girls, including A-Level studies. Our Preparatory School, Barlborough Hall is a day school and includes a Nursery provision. Following our most recent ISI inspection in October 2023, it was noted 'EYFS is effectively managed and the individual needs and abilities of the children are met in all areas of development.'
