Job description – To teach the school swimming curriculum to students from Nursery to Year 6; run competitive, developing and recreational swimming clubs before and after school; and organise and attend swimming galas both at school and for away galas.

This is an exciting opportunity, under the guidance of the Head of Primary P.E and the Director of Sport, and to work in close collaboration with the P.E. team, to develop our existing swimming programme for Nursery to Year 6 at our brand new Azabudai campus opening in September 2023. We will have our own 6 lanes in a 25m indoor pool allowing us to do year-round swimming lessons for all pupils; devise a club programme; as well as host swim meets. https://www.bst.ac.jp/uniquely-bst/central-tokyo-campuses/azabudai-campus

You should be energetic, dedicated and creative, with a flair for working with children and who is capable of inspiring our pupils to build a life-long passion for swimming. The principal focus will be building on the development of students’ swimming in lesson time from Early Years to Key Stage 2. We are looking for someone who has experience taking children, who perhaps have never been in a pool, as well as stretching the students who have been swimming competitively for a number of years. You will need excellent communication skills when liaising with your team, parents and other schools. Professional Responsibilities

Responsible to – Head of Primary P.E. and Director of Sport

  1. Swimming Coach duties
  • Be an exemplary swimming coach, clearly demonstrating effective planning and organisation to ensure enjoyable and challenging sessions for all students.
  • Monitor and report on students’ progress and development.
  • Attend all competitive swim meets/galas throughout the season, including some weekends.
  • Work collaboratively with the P.E. team and other swim coaches.
  • Manage and liaise with support staff and/or lifeguards.
  • Ensure students are taught in a safe, clean environment and have a good knowledge of pool health and safety protocol and procedures; as well as child safeguarding & child protection procedures in a physical education setting.
  • Liaise with the Head of P.E. to ensure the correct equipment is available for the right lessons (ordering and budgeting).
  1. Administrative Support
  • To assist with the planning of swim meets and subsequent data evaluation and communication.
  • To communicate with teachers, students, parents and local schools to ensure accurate scheduling and communication throughout the academic year. 
  1. General
  • To make an active contribution to the BST Outdoors and Residential Programme when required. 
  • To attend whole-staff and PE meetings, as well as CPD where appropriate.
  • To reinforce expectations for appropriate student behaviour at all times.
  • To support the PE department with various administrative tasks and lesson support when required.

Other reasonable requests made by the Head of Primary P.E and Director of Sport

We desire:

  • At least 2 years of swim coaching experience in a similar setting (a qualified teacher or coach would be considered an advantage).
  • The newly appointed Swimming Teacher will ideally have a minimum of SEQ Level 2 Teaching Swimming Qualification (Teaching Swimming to Babies and Toddlers qualification also desirable), or STA Level 2 Certificate in Teaching Swimming or ASA equivalent, and, ideally, he/she should hold a current lifeguard qualification.
  • Have a recognised life-guard qualification or be willing to be trained in this area.
  • A strong and committed team player that is able to adapt and work in an exceptionally busy and strong department.
  • A strong understanding of the health and safety requirements when operating within aquatics in an international school environment.
  • A strong commitment to high standards and a thriving extra-curricular program which will include early morning practice, after-school and weekend competitions and galas. 
  • A person with the ability to work under pressure and use their own initiative.
  • Determination and ability to supply the best educational experience in the world.
