Due to expansion, an exciting opportunity has arisen in this forward-thinking full-time, alternative education provision for young people in Years 10 and 11 who have found mainstream education a challenge. Learners who are referred to LPW Independent School from mainstream schools are offered a range of qualifications and experiences that are accredited through GCSE’s and functional skills to enable them to progress into further education, training or employment.

In this role, your primary areas of responsibility will be to:

  • Plan, deliver and review teaching and learning practices aiming to constantly raise learning standards;
  • Use a range of tools to positively challenge inappropriate and difficult behaviour;
  • Work effectively with a team of Teachers and HLTAs to plan and deliver a personalised learning program for learners;
  • Monitor learner progress through regular formative and summative assessments;
  • Have a creative and innovative approach to planning and teaching to re-engage disaffected learners in education and overcome barriers to learning;
  • Strong knowledge of assessment for learning strategies and differentiation;
  • A strong desire to have an impact on the lives of vulnerable young people;
  • Interest in working holistically with a child centred approach;
  • Ensure that the quality of your teaching, learning and assessment is good or better, working with colleagues to achieve this through a team approach;
  • Support the preparation for OFSTED inspections and ensure the Independent Schools Standards are met;
  • Plan, deliver and review engaging curriculums regularly to ensure the needs of the organisation and its learners are met;
  • Monitor student learning, social, emotional and behavioural progress against targets;
  • Encourage the development of positive attitudes to learning through well-planned teaching experiences;
  • Have an excellent understanding and working knowledge of assessment for learning techniques to be utilised in lessons;
  • Act on quality improvement plans and contribute to self-assessment reports;
  • Ensure that safeguarding and child protection policies are complied with.

Key Worker Role

As a teacher you will also become the key worker for a small group of learners. Through this work you will:

  • Deliver an inspirational curriculum by having strong subject knowledge with experience delivering to GCSE level;
  • Plan, deliver and review teaching and learning practices aiming to constantly raise learning standards;
  • Establish trusting relationship with parents and carers, liaising with external agencies where appropriate (e.g. Social services, Bristol Drugs Project, Barnardo’s);
  • Ensure that the health and wellbeing needs of the learner are met;
  • Carry out all duties within the spirit and requirements of LPW’s Equal Opportunities policy and procedures, actively promoting inclusion and diversity, and seeking to challenge and overcome disadvantage and discrimination;
  • Carry out any other duties that may be required and are reasonable and commensurate with the role.

The skills and experience that you will bring to this role are:

  • Special Educational Needs (SEN) knowledge and experience working with social, emotional and mental difficulties (SEMH);
  • Experience of leading a curriculum;
  • Training or knowledge of positive handling;
  • Valuable experience in a learning setting and a relevant education qualification;
  • Ability to use your initiative and be self driven;
  • Experience of working within a team of people and contributing to quality assurance processes;
  • Willingness to develop an understanding of awarding bodies and the processes required for registrations, assessments, verification, claims and certification;
  • Understanding of the procedures followed in a secondary school to help with a successful transition to an alternative education provision;
  • Experience of meeting requirements of external inspections and standards.

LPW Summary

In the past year, LPW as a community-interest-company responsible for running other contracts, has placed 162 Bristol-based young people into employment, education and training. Of these, 40% were placed within two months of their first contact with us. Through our drop-in centres, LPW has also helped many children and young people (CYP) who have come to us for advice on training, employment, housing support and other personal issues. We are excited by the work we do and love to talk about it.
