Position Information

Buxton Public School is in the semi-rural town of Buxton with 148 students. Our school provides for children's educational needs in a happy, stimulating and caring environment. The school site is rural and vast with a large playing area for our students. We have a strong focus on student wellbeing, consistent with our school motto: 'We Care'.  We are a Positive Behaviour for Learning school that allows for consistency of expected behaviours across the school.

In 2022 we began the process of engaging our whole school community in rewriting our Buxton Public School strategic directions and the new directions for Buxton Public School Strategic Improvement Plan 2023-2026. This plan will include details of the steps our school will take to improve student learning outcomes, the achievement and growth of all students and ensure continuous improvement and impact.

Teachers engage in reflecting practices using the what works best document. The school has a strong curriculum focus on English and Mathematics with the APCI working K-6 to drive data-informed practice. Collaborative Inquiry, coaching, growth mindset, embedding students learning dispositions and the Berry Street Model of Education including Quality Teaching Rounds are all part of the strategic direction initiatives embedded over the next four years of the new school plan.

Within our new school plan and driven by evidence (including meta-analyses, action learning, and student voice) we are committed to strengthening our learning culture and to improve use of feedback, questioning and dialogue. We will build capacity and collective efficacy so that our school continues to embed sustainable change to improve student outcomes.

In the past 3 years our community has endured an unprecedented amount of community trauma some of these include natural disasters, weather events and the pandemic. After everything we have endured over the past few years, our school has become pivotal in reconnecting our community.  The past community traumas have had an impact on our Buxton Public School families and as a school our plan will address and support this through the Berry Street Education Model training and Department of Education Trauma Informed Practice professional Learning. We are dedicated to the well being of every student and the programs that are embedded to support our students and families reflect this. The 2023-2026 new school plan will demonstrate initiatives to support the positive growth mind sets and trauma informed research to build the learning capacity of our students.

Other curriculum opportunities continue as the school provides many forums for children to be involved in singing, sport, dance, art, debating and public speaking. A large variety of leadership opportunities are available, and all staff work closely with students to fully develop their potential and achieve their personal best. Our Student Leadership Parliament offers students opportunities to engage in and lead portfolios of their interest throughout the school. This supports our strong emphasis on student voice which include our students engaging in learning conferencing to set individual personal and academic goals.

Our playgrounds are well resourced with stimulating play spaces to engage our students and our buddy systems and playground friendship programs support all of K-6. The school continues to be an active member of the Wollondilly Communities of Schools and participates in PSSA sporting events and the Wollondilly Performing Arts Festival. Buxton Public School is committed to having a strong involvement in our community. We work in partnership with our parents to provide the best environment we can for our students.
