Job overview

We are currently looking for a full-time Teacher of EAL to join our Senior School in Voorschoten, just outside of The Hague, from April 2018.

Our goals

At the BSN we are passionate about a high challenge, high support approach to language acquisition and aim to deliver a progressive syllabus that guides students through essential first steps, integrated content language teaching and continued academic literacy support.

We believe the mainstream classroom provides the ideal learning environment and that every subject teacher is also a language teacher to the benefit of all students. In addition to this, small language focus groups provide a supportive, student centred environment in which students can experiment with language and develop the social and academic literacy skills they need to take full advantage of the opportunities on offer throughout the school.

The BSN challenges students to take charge of their own EAL learning journey supported by portfolios of evidence, ongoing assessment for learning and clear steps that help students plot a course to advance their language skills.
Our international community also understands the importance of mother tongue development and challenges learners to use their full language repertoire to process and respond to the demands of the curriculum. Our parent community is encouraged to participate in all aspects of their child’s learning and we aim to develop a greater understanding of language acquisition through regular workshops and links to diverse language communities.

What you will bring

The EAL department is evolving and we are keen to hear from highly qualified language specialists who are passionate about additive bilingualism. They will be used to diagnosing individual language needs and supporting progress with engaging and challenging classroom based tasks. They will have significant experience in scaffolding language for learning at all levels and be able to contribute their own ideas to support language development across the curriculum. They will also be interested in team teaching and building a close relationship with subject areas. A working knowledge of mainstream subject curricula would be an asset.

You will be teaching mixed ability groups of KS3 students withdrawn from the mainstream for language development and will also support students within the mainstream classroom. Experience of the Cambridge exams, IGCSE and IELTS would be an advantage as you may also teach exam preparation courses. You will be expected to contribute to the EAL learning environment, building an enticing, student owned space that seeks to promote multilingualism and support the development of the whole child.
