The Team

Curriculum Area – Art, Design, Fashion & Photography

The art team works with students across a range of different courses from general art and design to fashion, photography, illustration, and spatial and graphic design. Courses are run at levels 1 - 4

The Role

This role would be suited to someone looking to teach students, with particular focus on photography within the art and design curriculum. You will be an experienced teacher delivering skills, knowledge and understanding to enable students to learn new specialist photography skills on their learning programmes. We are looking for someone who is highly creative and imaginative who can work alongside an experienced team to develop the photography courses.

To maintain the highest standards in art and design education. The role includes delivery of specialist photography lessons at both level 2, 3 and foundation diploma in art with the UAL awarding body. Some general information sessions for students on health and safety in art and design photography, you will take responsibility for a specialist photography equipment and materials and be able to develop skills in students in a wide range of different photography techniques and processes including dark room skills, studio photography, on location shoots, photographic screen, and digital development of imagery. Use of digital programmes such as photoshop and illustrator is essential. Use of the laser cutter for experimental photography development is also part of the department’s skills. 

Photography for commercial, fine art and product design is an area of specialism within Northampton college. The role also involves helping students to progress with their education independently in one-to-one support sessions using focused formative assessment with students to enable them to develop their own work, especially for their final major projects. You will be expected to work as a member of the team to complete final summative assessments for units throughout the academic year. 

The delivery of specialist skills lessons to groups of students directed by course leaders from a range of different courses within the art area in a directed timetable. This role may also include some general art and design lessons. This will include general art and design, fashion, photography, illustration, spatial/graphic design, and the foundation diploma in art.

As with all teaching roles, the development of presentation and exhibitions skills is critical within photography but also as a member of the art team. End of year final exhibitions are a great opportunity for students and team members to celebrate the hard work from the year. The photography team excel in mid-year bespoke photography exhibitions in the local community.

Managing and effective use of equipment and materials and stock within photography in an effective and sustainable manner is an essential part of the teacher’s role.

The Successful Candidate

The successful candidate’s knowledge, skills, experience, abilities, and qualities will include: 

  • Educated to level 4 (including GCSE Maths & English at a grade C/4 or above) 
  • A qualification in art and design Photography is essential. The candidate must be able to demonstrate skills and expertise in the photography specialist area. 
  • Experience of working with young people and adults as a teacher 
  • Enthusiastic, motivated, and committed to supporting and motivating students. 
  • Strong digital skills, including word processing and electronic communication. 
  • Passionate about the visual arts and photography. 
  • Well organised and able to plan and manage resources in a highly effective manner.

Northampton College is a mixed, non-selective, non-denominational further education college situated in Northamptonshire. It is a 16-plus institution with three campuses: a major building at its main Northampton site, a smaller campus near the town centre and another 20 miles away in Daventry. It provides places for around 9,000 students aged 16 and over, most of whom are full-time and aged 16-18.

Northampton College was opened in 1973. It merged with Daventry Tertiary College to expand its Daventry campus in August 2004, and its Booth Lane campus reopened after a large redevelopment in 2012.
