Job overview

The British Junior Academy of Brussels is expanding in order to offer places in Year Seven from September 2019 and Year Eight in 2020. The development is in response to parent demand and confirms the Governors’ vision to be the only authentic Preparatory school in Brussels. The school already has an excellent record of feeding pupils into top European and British independent schools including Eton, Westminster, Magdalen College, St Mary’s Ascot and Cheltenham Ladies, and continues to attract high calibre British and international families.

The school is seeking an experienced Key Stage Three teacher with a strong background in UK Preparatory education and the ISEB curriculum. The ideal candidate will have the ability to teach a range of subjects in a form setting and co-ordinate support from other subject specialist teachers as required. As the pupil numbers increase to the anticipated two-form entry maximum there is the opportunity to work closely with the Headteacher to design and plan the most appropriate teaching model.

This is an opportunity to join the school at an exciting stage of development and use previous knowledge and experience to assist with defining the new character and culture of the upper year groups in the school. The position will suit a person who enjoys a strategic level challenge; can lead in a collaborative style and understands the importance of pastoral care in an international setting.

Interviews will be held in London and Brussels.

The British Junior Academy of Brussels (BJAB), established in 1992, is located in the diplomatic residential area of Brussels close to the main institutions of the EU, NATO, major NGOs and offices of multinational companies. Our reputation as a high quality provider of the National Curriculum of England is recognised in the community and by our 2016 “Outstanding” rating. We encourage and expect excellence from all our pupils and place emphasis on independence and self-motivation. Our ethos is grounded in providing a safe, caring, respectful, tolerant and disciplined environment where high standards prevail in all areas of school life. The parent body is active and engaged in supporting the educational aims of the school and providing a lively social dimension through the PTA. The school has approximately 200 pupils and a teaching staff of 30.

BJAB is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children. All candidates will be subject to the appropriate background checks.

About British Junior Academy of Brussels

The British Junior Academy of Brussels was founded in 1992 to offer a high quality English-speaking education to children aged 3 to 14 years old. The school caters for families from the expatriate, commercial and diplomatic communities, reflecting the mix of nationalities that one would expect to find in an international centre such as Brussels.

BJAB spans two sites in the European Quarter of Brussels. Our Lower School houses classrooms for pupils from Early Years to Year 4, while our newly renovated Prep School is used by Years 5 through Year 9. We are expanding our offering to include Year 10 from September 2024, growing organically to Year 13.

The educational programme is based on the British National Curriculum, with adaptations to reflect our location in the heart of Europe. Daily French lessons are an integral part of our timetable from the Reception Year upwards, as are weekly swimming and physical education lessons. We pride ourselves on being able to offer small teaching groups throughout the school. With class sizes of around 18 pupils, we are able to provide a high degree of individual attention to each child.

The Headteacher, Mr Francis Retter, is committed to the maintenance and development of the best educational opportunities across the curriculum for all pupils. He is supported by a strong team of British-qualified teachers, a number of whom have specialist training in a range of educational disciplines such as Early Years Education; Language Support; Special Educational Needs; P.E.; I.C.T, and Science. The school is committed to maintaining a balance of subject specialists, thus ensuring that the teaching team can deliver excellent cross-curricular teaching in an encouraging, stimulating and innovative environment.

The British Junior Academy of Brussels is a member of the Council of British Independent Schools in the European Communities (COBISEC) and is inspected by the International Schools Inspectorate (ISI). We are a member of the Independent Association of Prep Schools (IAPS), a Round Square school, and a Cambridge International school.
