The positive impact you can have on a pupil’s life is most likely the reason you got into teaching in the first place. At Lakeside School, that impact will be greater than you could have imagined due to the high staff to pupil ratio, level of expertise and experience and the fact that we can really make a difference in our pupils’ lives from such a young age.

Lakeside School is a small, independent, nurturing school, registered to serve the needs of 34 pupils. The school opened in January 2001 and provides an outstanding environment in which pupils with complex communication and/or learning difficulties with related anxieties and behaviours can reach their full potential.

We are in an exciting phase of development, with a secondary extension to our primary school planned for the autumn term (2022), and we are therefore beginning to appoint staff for our new provision.

As part of the Witherslack Group, we provide outstanding schooling for pupils with a range of complex educational needs. For instance, some function at an incredibly high level but may have social communication difficulties, autism or ADHD and struggle to maintain concentration, whilst others may need emotional support to help them achieve their potential. Each pupil’s individual needs requires a unique/bespoke approach. Our teachers are there to channel their individual capabilities into academic success, as part of a holistic and uniquely attentive educational strategy – and all of this from a setting that is truly inspiring to both pupils and teachers.

The Role

Key to this role will be learning what each pupil is particularly interested in, how they learn and what motivates them, then channelling those factors into the way you teach each of the subjects so every pupil gets the most out of them. You’ll inspire your pupils to enjoy a range of subjects, bringing each lesson to life and keeping them engaged. Keeping subjects relevant and making them matter to our pupils is a big part of the Witherslack Group philosophy. We are looking for someone who is attentive to our pupils’ needs and is flexible in meeting those needs, this is not your average teaching role, but you’ll always have the very best resources at your disposal, so you can focus on inspiring each and every one of your pupils.

You’ll be working with pupils until the end of Key Stage 4 (initially Key Stage 3 only). It will be challenging and rewarding in equal measure, but whether you’ve given a particularly inspiring lesson or helped a pupil with a presentation or exam arrangements, you can expect to take home a sense of achievement, having done something rewarding every single day. As all teachers know, some days can be harder than others but, at Witherslack Group, you’re never alone. You’ll work as part of a collaborative team, not just with other teachers in the school and across the Group but with our in-house psychologists, family liaison officer and therapy professionals, all pulling together to support our pupils in reaching their short and long term outcomes.

The Person

We’re looking for a dedicated, committed teacher who has a passion to make a difference and is creative in finding ways that will allow you to do so. We would like you to be involved in conversations and decision making relating to how we, as a school, can best meet the needs of each child (regards training, support and annual reviews). Working in our specialist environment you will be able to tailor learning to individual need, building strong, insightful teacher/pupil relationships. Compassion and empathy are two character traits that are essential when working at Lakeside, as you will need to be able to understand why our pupils’ journeys aren’t always linear.

The Rewards

The benefit of doing a role like this is it feels good. Every day brings a sense of hard-won achievement and progress. There are also some outstanding rewards – in fact, our salary and benefits package is one of the best in the sector.

It includes:

  • A highly competitive salary
  • Full school holiday
  • Teacher pension scheme or a range of flexible pension options to suit personal circumstances (where applicable)
  • A comprehensive, market-leading induction and ongoing training
  • Extensive Group staff benefits, such as a Medicash Health Plan/Employee Assistance and Cycle to Work Scheme
  • Free lunches
  • Free DBS Enhanced checks for all new employees

We strongly believe that people should have choice and flexibility when it comes to saving for future. As such we offer membership of the Teachers Pensions Scheme if you are eligible to join the scheme. We also offer a flexible alternative option to the Teachers Pension Scheme that allows you to opt out and receive an allowance of 15% of your base salary and free life insurance. If you take this option you are also able to join our Scottish Widows Group Pension Scheme where your employee contributions are matched up to 5%.

The Witherslack Group is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of its young people. This post is subject to an enhanced DBS check. We are an equal opportunities employer welcoming applications from all sections of the community.
