We are looking for a full-time teacher to join the team Ltyentye Apurte Catholic School (LACS) in Santa Teresa. This is a remarkable school in a beautiful community.
LACS is a K - 12 school in Santa Teresa (aka Ltyentye Apurte), a medium-sized Indigenous Catholic community located 83 KM south east of Alice Springs. There are 40 staff and an enrollment of approximately 125 students.
The school has small class sizes and features specialist facilities including a community library and home economics room. Every classroom has access to the internet and is fitted with PCs, laptops, ipads and interactive whiteboards.
English is the second or third language for most students at the school, and the Arrernte language & culture program is a key focus of the curriculum at LACS.
Teachers work as members of a team in partnership with local Indigenous people and Arrernte Assistant Teachers. Staff members live in close proximity to each other and the school. The standard of accommodation is good.
ABOUT THE JOB:
This is a specially funded, one year contract. It is an exciting opportunity for someone wanting to experience work and life in a remote aboriginal community. We are looking for a qualified teacher but their role would not be class teaching. Instead, they would work with groups of students on targeted curriculum, life-skills development, employment pathways, work experience coordination and aspects of aboriginal workforce development. Ltyentye Apurte (Santa Teresa) is an Aboriginal community belonging to the Eastern Arrernte people, and is located 83km south east of Alice Springs in semi-desert country. Temperatures are extreme from 0 degrees to 45 degrees. The Aboriginal residents speak Arrernte and use English as their second language. It is a dry community (no alcohol permitted on the property). No special Permits for the consumption of alcohol are granted. There are penalties for breaking the law. Santa Teresa has a fully equipped garage and workshop facility. Postal facilities are available and a general store and a well equipped health clinic operate. There is a Recreation Centre which children and youth of the community access most days. A 25 metre swimming pool is operational during the summer months. The people of Santa Teresa have a long association with the Catholic Church and are currently served by the Divine Word Missionaries, the Sisters of the Good Samaritan and the Marist Brothers. The School is an Indigenous Catholic Community School and is administered by the Catholic Education Office based in Darwin and the Marist Brothers in partnership with the community. It is centrally funded by the Federal Government and NT Education Department. It caters for children from Preschool to Year 12. There are approximately 120 students.
