Our Council’s vision is to make Dumfries and Galloway the best place in Scotland to live, learn, work, visit and grow. Our Education Service contributes to this vision because it is as unique as the area itself. We are proud of our rich mix of schools – large and small, urban and rural, partnership and all-through. Our purpose is clear and simple – to increase achievement, attainment and participation for all young people 2-18 by maximising the opportunity for our staff to develop and innovate through collaborative working.

We believe in developing the autonomy of schools, Headteachers and their staff to facilitate the highest quality learning and teaching. We continue to use our resources in innovative ways to ensure we build on our investment in staff and their practice and this is reflected in continued improvements to attainment, achievement and participation.

We are committed to our teachers, evidenced by the provision of high quality professional learning opportunities for all.

Dumfries and Galloway provides opportunities to enjoy a rich and diverse quality of life for singles, couples and families in this magical corner of Scotland; the experiences on offer are as varied as the stunning landscape. From outdoor pursuits to nationally recognised arts festivals, there are activities and opportunities for all. Furthermore, good quality travel links bring major centres of population within easy reach.

Kirkcudbright Academy is a mixed, non-selective, non-denominational secondary school with sixth form situated in the town of Kirkcudbright within Dumfries and Galloway, in western Scotland. It is a state school. Smaller than average in size for a school of its type, the school’s latest handbook identifies a school roll of 415 secondary and sixth form students between the ages of 12-18.

The known history of the school goes back to the 16th century, one of its first records being from June 1582. At this time, only classics were part of the curriculum. It only originally taught boys, but appointed a mistress to teach girls in 1965, before the school grew into being fully co-educational. The first academy building on the school’s current site was constructed in 1818, and there have been renovations and extensions as recently as the late 1950s.
