Job overview

The post and the departments

Media

This is an opportunity to join a very successful, academically ambitious and growing department in d’Overbroeck’s Sixth Form.

We regularly have a cohort of around 30 students taking Media Studies at A Level and the department has a track record of outstanding results, both in Media Studies and, in previous years, Communication and Culture. Our students achieve these results because we have encouraged them to go beyond the specification to actively engage with the media they consume, rather than the media we as teachers consume, and with the wider issues facing the media in today’s culture.

We do this through a discussion-led approach in our lessons and a weekly blog to which the students are expected to contribute. We give opportunities for extension work for ambitious students by providing extra-reading and watching material.

There is also a growing programme of events and trips to help stretch and extend our students’ thinking. For example, we arranged a talk by a leading investigative journalist about his involvement in a campaign to free a death row prisoner and a seminar led by a journalist-turned-academic on George Orwell and the media.

We also encourage our students to take the Extended Project Qualification (EPQ), and projects have ranged in the past from Mad Men and the crisis of identity through to the cultural significance of Black Lives Matter.

The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to the planning, teaching and assessment within the EDUQAS Media Studies specification.

EPQ

The EPQ department’s philosophy of allowing students the academic freedom to explore topics that truly interest them has resulted in exceptionally strong results with cohorts typically achieving in region of 80-90% A*/A grades.

The EPQ course has a weekly taught component where the focus is developing skills such as independent research, project management, academic referencing, and multimedia presentation techniques, all essential skills to completing a successful EPQ. Once students have settled on their EPQ question they are assigned a supervisor to support them throughout the remainder of the project. As the assistant EPQ coordinator, you will support the Head of EPQ in the administrative and logistical aspects of the course, as well as delivering EPQ lessons.

About d'Overbroeck's

THE SCHOOL

d’Overbroeck’s is a co-educational independent day and boarding school in Oxford for students aged 11 – 18. The school roll currently stands at around 750, and this is set to grow in the coming years.

Founded in 1977, initially as a Sixth Form, d’Overbroeck’s has maintained its founding values throughout its growth.

We believe in outstanding teaching and laughter. We celebrate the individual and foster a culture that promotes collaboration and originality. We pride ourselves on our unique blend of social informality and academic rigour.

d’Overbroeck’s consists of three sections:

Years 7-11 – 200 students; currently all day students although open to boarders from next year. Based at Leckford Place, OX2 6HX.

Sixth Form – 440 students; a mixture of day and boarding. Domestic and international. Based at a purpose-built site at 333 Banbury Road.

The International School – around 125 international students who are all boarders, across years 9-11.

All in all, this is a busy and happy educational environment in which staff and students enjoy positive relationships based on mutual respect and a shared sense of purpose. As our most recent ISI inspection report puts it:

‘A defining characteristic of d’Overbroeck’s is its close-knit, informal atmosphere within which students grow in confidence, self-esteem, respect for themselves and for others. Students are very supportive of each other and behaviour throughout is excellent, exemplified in considerate, warm relationships.

In its key findings, our most recent inspection report (2021) found that our students are highly motivated with extremely positive attitudes to learning. They were described as successful collaborative learners who are naturally inclusive. They were said to have a remarkably strong sense of self understanding and excellent awareness of how to improve and achieve their goals.
