We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated individual to join our outstanding Art and Media department.  

Art provision at Scarborough Sixth Form College is part of our outstanding Art & Media department. The departmental team, led by Alice Thornton, comprises seven teachers, six of whom are full-time.  It is a vibrant department in which very high aspirations are realised and students work on challenging projects to achieve very high standards. 

This is a teaching role and we are seeking either someone with good teaching experience or who can demonstrate the capacity to develop the necessary teaching skills. 

Your degree may be in Art or Design or a related field. 

The successful applicant, will have high levels of expertise in Fine Art (painting, drawing, sculpture, lens based media) but must also feel confident in teaching a wide range of disciplines. 

The pathway is designed for students who are interested in applying for degree courses such as Architecture, Fashion, Film and Art History. You will be responsible for the UCAS applications and personal statements of the Foundation cohort therefore strong English skills are paramount. 

A strong interest in contextual studies and a knowledge of current practice will be essential to the role. We will also be interested in relevant work experience in the creative industries.

It is expected that you will be the lead teacher on the Foundation Media course, and will need to monitor and tutor overall progress of students, and contribute to the development of the course. In addition it is expected that you will contribute to the teaching of some of the other Art and/or Media courses, either A level or BTEC, provided by the College. 

The successful candidate will be committed and hard-working, with the ability and desire to inspire and develop talented young learners and creative professionals. You will be well supported and can look forward to contributing to an excellent team and sharing the rewards of teaching our learners.

The successful candidate will be appointed to the national pay scales for Teachers in Sixth Form Colleges, within the range £23,396 p.a. to £38,748 p.a., dependent on experience.

The contract will be on a full or substantial part-time, permanent basis, commencing September 2019.

College Overview

Scarborough Sixth Form College is an open-access College, which provides general education primarily for 16-19 year olds in the area. The majority of our 1000+ students are full-time, and follow Advanced (level 3) courses from which most progress onto Higher Education.  The College has developed a very successful vocationally-related provision in a range of BTEC Nationals and we also offer a one-year Level 2 programme (our “Progression Year”) consisting of GCSEs in Maths, English and Science plus a range of BTEC Firsts.  Achievement at the College is high, and above national benchmarks, with outstanding positive value-added overall.  The College had an Inspection in December 2019 and was confirmed as a Good provider. 

The College provides a pleasant environment in which to work, being set in attractive grounds on the edge of town. College campus facilities have been enhanced by almost £5 million investment. Scarborough itself offers an attractive coastline and beaches and is situated on the edge of the North York Moors, within easy reach of the City of York.
