Situated in 23 acres of leafy grounds, Queen Mary’s College is an inclusive, vibrant and high achieving sixth form college with a fantastic reputation both locally and nationally. Following Ofsted’s latest inspection in 2016, The National School and College Performance Tables not only identify Queen Mary’s College as one of the best in the region, but it also places it in the top 5% of all A- level providers across the country.

The Department of Creative Arts and Technologies offers a wide range of provision within the College.  Recruitment has increased steadily over the last three years, and there are currently over 600 students studying courses during the day.  Ten full-time and three part-time staff work in the Department at present, and they are well supported by two specialist technicians.

The Department offers a selection of courses to cater for the wide range of ability and interests of the students at the College. Courses currently offered include:

A Level Art, Craft and Design

A Level Fine Art

A Level Graphic Design

A Level Textiles

A Level Photography

L3 Cambridge Technicals in Art and Design

A Level Media

A Level Film Studies

L2 and L3 BTEC in Media

A variety of enrichment courses, including Life Drawing, Dress Making and Games Design.

Photography and Graphics courses are under the leadership of the Director of Learning for Creative Arts and Technologies. The Department has a reputation for being extremely supportive of its students and staff, and new staff will always be given assistance with resources and any other help they may need. Staff work closely together to plan schemes of work and share good practice. Links with the local community, schools and employers are good and the department takes every opportunity to enrich the students’ experience through exhibitions and educational visits. The department is also supported by two creative art technicians. 

The Department is based in purpose built accommodation in the Allen Building.  It is well equipped with specialist rooms including a darkroom; studios for Photography, Graphics and Painting; and multi-media suites of computers.  Innovation in teaching approaches is very much welcomed and supported.  

The aim of the department is to enrich the learning experience of our students by delivering the syllabus in a manner which is contemporary, varied and challenging. The Department benefits from its links with the Central Studio, (onsite Theatre) with music practice rooms and a sound recording studio. There are excellent facilities to access traditional and digital print making alongside photographic darkroom facilities, an editing suite and a television recording studio

Wherever possible, we can offer flexibility in the subjects to be taught, taking into account your personal experience, skills and preferences. As a Personal Tutor, you will also motivate, monitor, support and guide students’ academic progress through regular one-to-one consultations.

Whether you’re experienced or newly qualified, you should be an inspiring teacher with a good working knowledge of recent post-16 curriculum developments. A willingness to contribute to the development of course materials for courses offered by the department is also essential.

Queen Mary’s College is a large progressive and successful sixth form college, conveniently situated close to the centre of Basingstoke in thirty acres of parkland and playing fields. The College has excellent facilities, including the Central Studio (a professional theatre), and a purpose built sports centre for students, staff and local residents, including a swimming pool and two floodlit artificial sports pitches . The site also boasts a state of the art specialist Art and IT building and in January this year a new £12.8 million, three-storey facility was opened designed to accommodate Science, Humanities, Sport and students with learning difficulties and disabilities . Queen Mary’s College is continuing to enhance all aspects of estates and facilities. Teaching and Learning outcomes at the College are excellent.
