Located in Loughborough, Leicestershire, Welbeck Defence Sixth Form College is a co-educational sixth form college, primarily focused on providing education to students looking to enter the British Armed Forces or the civil service. The college was established in 1953, and moved onto its current site in 2005. An independent institution, the college charges fees for study, and sets a minimum academic standard for entry based on GCSE results, however many students looking to enter the Armed Forces will receive sponsorship from the Ministry of Defence, resulting in drastically lower fees. The vast majority of the college’s students are boarders, some 300 in total.

Headteacher

Mr Peter Middleton

Values and Vision

As a college heavily focused on preparing students for life in military or government service, Welbeck Defence runs a curriculum primarily built around STEM subjects, with sponsored students being well supported through their transition into higher education and eventually the Armed Forces. Outside of the college's academic focus, as a boarding school Welbeck works hard to foster a sense of community among its pupils, with extensive opportunities for relaxation and socialisation.

ISI Inspection

“The college successfully fulfills its aims, including offering to all students a range of opportunities so that they can achieve to the best of their ability within a framework of shared values and standards. The quality of the students’ achievements in their academic work and in their activities is excellent. Students are successful in public examinations. All students including those with SEND or EAL make good progress.”
