Job overview

Stonyhurst College is the UK’s leading Catholic co-educational boarding and day school for pupils aged 3-18. Boarding is from the age of 7.

At the College, there are approximately 500 pupils aged 13-18, two thirds of whom are boarders. At Stonyhurst St Mary’s Hall, the adjacent dedicated preparatory school, there are around 300 pupils aged 3-13. Stonyhurst is set in stunning countryside, near the Ribble and Hodder rivers and the beautiful Trough of Bowland.

The Biology department is part of the wider Faculty of Sciences. The Faculty has a long tradition of academic excellence. Results at A-Level, GCSE and in the IB Diploma are strong. The following courses are offered: Physics A level (OCRB) and GCSE (AQA); Biology A-Level (Edexcel) & GCSE (AQA); Chemistry A-Level (AQA) and GCSE (AQA). The IB Diploma is offered at Standard and Higher Level in all three sciences. Stonyhurst also runs a Pre-IB course in Syntax (year 11) where pupils are taught AQA GCSEs in the sciences in one year.

In addition to examination excellence, the Faculty is successful in a range of national competitions. In Biology the Biology Olympiad is open to sixth form pupils and years 9 (Lower Grammar) and 10 (Grammar) compete in the Biology Challenge. In Chemistry the department offers the C3L6 Chemistry paper for year 12 pupils (Poetry) and the Chemistry Olympiad for Rhetoricians (year 13). The British Physics Olympiad, BPhO, is offered to Physics pupils in several year groups. Pupils have also progressed to study the British Astronomy and Astrophysics Olympiad.  The College also offers the Experimental Project in Physics.

The Faculty of Science currently comprises 7 full-time and 2 part-time teachers who are supported by full-time specialist lab-technicians in each subject. The Faculty has its own purpose built block with a suite of classrooms and laboratories for each science, prep. rooms and staff workrooms, all in the same area. Classrooms are well-equipped with practical and theory areas, electronic whiteboards and all staff have their own Stonyhurst lap-tops. There is also a shared ICT suite with 24 computers. The College is fortunate to have its own observatory which is used for co-curricular activities. Classes in the Faculty rarely exceed 24 in size at KS3 and KS4, or 12 in size at KS5.

Stonyhurst College is the UK’s leading Catholic co-educational boarding and day school for pupils aged 3-18. Boarding is from the age of 7.

At the College, there are approximately 498 pupils aged 13-18, two thirds of whom are boarders.  At Stonyhurst St Mary’s Hall, the adjacent dedicated preparatory school, there are around 240 pupils aged 3-13.  Stonyhurst is set in stunning countryside, near the Ribble and Hodder rivers and the beautiful Trough of Bowland. Manchester is only about an hour away by road or rail. The market town of Clitheroe is four miles away,  and we are 12 miles from the city of Preston. The Lake District can be reached in about an hour,  and the Yorkshire Dales are even closer.

Stonyhurst has a fascinating heritage, being the oldest continuously active Jesuit school in the world.

It was founded in St Omer, Northern France (then the Spanish Netherlands), in 1593, and moved to its present site in Lancashire’s beautiful Ribble Valley in 1794. Throughout the years of religious

persecution in England,  Stonyhurst educated the boys of the English Catholic aristocracy and gentry.

The College’s Ignatian mission and identity,  and its sense of family, set Stonyhurst apart from other schools. Pupils are urged to do as much as they can (Quant Je Puis) for other people following the example of Jesus Christ and following in the spirit and charism of the Jesuits. The College prepares young people to change the world for others.

Stonyhurst is a family where heritage and innovation are fused to inspire young people to be agents of change in the world.
