The advertised post is a fixed-term, maternity cover post, for 12 months, commencing on Monday 23 April 2018. The post is 0.6 of full-time, although there may be some scope for increasing this in September.
The successful applicant will be involved in teaching Biology in both the International Section and the Sixth Form. In the first instance, the role involves sharing the teaching of two lower sixth classes, as well as two year 11 classes at the International Section. However, the details of groups taught will probably change in September with the new academic year. Maximum class size is ten students, which enables teachers to gain a detailed understanding of each individual student’s strengths and needs. We value independence of thought above mere acquisition of skills, and although we seek to provide the best possible preparation for public exams we aim to do so in such a way as to foster real understanding and enjoyment of the material being studied.
Technology is used to support teaching and learning throughout the school, including interactive whiteboards, online learning and the judicious use of video examples.
The Post and the Department
This is an opportunity to join an exceptionally talented and successful department. The Biology department is led jointly by Jaimie Tarrell and Dr Anne-Marie Jones. Jaimie Tarrell has responsibility for sixth form Biology and Anne-Marie Jones for Biology and Science in years 7-11. They are assisted by the coordinator of Science at the International Section for iGCSE.
In the Sixth Form we follow the AQA specification and in the international Section we prepare students for the Edexcel iGCSE exam. Biology is a large department, particularly in the Sixth Form, with about 70 students across the two years. With the move to new buildings for both the International Section and the Sixth Form we anticipate further expansion.
Person Specification and Qualifications
We are looking for a talented and passionate Biologist, who is able to take over classes mid-year and, in the case of the year 11 groups, ensure they are fully prepared for their imminent iGCSE exams. We place a high degree of importance on strong academic skills and subject knowledge, as well as the ability to convey enthusiasm and enjoyment of the subject to students across the ability and age range.
We do not require all our teachers to have a PGCE, or equivalent qualification, but we do expect them to have demonstrable teaching expertise and, given the nature of the post, the successful candidate will need to be able to take on teaching of groups at a key point in the academic year, with confidence and experience.
