Job overview

The school requires a well qualified and enthusiastic teacher to teach BTEC National Extended Certificate in Business and to launch a new GCSE business course as well as leading Careers and Work Experience throughout the school.  The ability to teach Economics at A level is desirable.

Pupils taking BTEC Business follow the Edexcel Business specification including three mandatory and one optional unit.  The successful candidate will be able to select the appropriate AS/A Level Economics syllabus.  

The post is initially part-time but is expected to go to a full-time position in September 2021 and includes the following responsibilities:  

  • developing the department's Business resources and teaching strategies and helping to ensure that schemes of work are reviewed and updated annually
  • fulfilling the duties of Quality Nominee for BTEC including the quality management review/desktop review process and oversee the BTEC qualification across the school
  • instigating and leading on BTEC National Extended Certificate Business and fulfilling the duties of Lead Internal Verifier, including the coordination and management of the standards verification process
  • taking responsibility for the setting and marking of work suitable for preparing pupils for AS/A-level examinations in GCSE Business and BTEC National Extended Certificate Business
  • maintaining a working knowledge of the subjects taught and their teaching specifications through attending appropriate in-service training courses
  • promoting BTEC National Extended Certificate Business and GCSE Business as subjects
  • facilitating the establishment of and running an Entrepreneurial club (Young Enterprise or somethings similar) annually
  • leading careers across the school in conjunction with Future Smart Careers and the Head of Sixth Form
  • participating in options discussions and meetings with pupils and parents
  • overseeing a cohesive work experience programme building on and maintaining existing links
  • attending Department Meetings, Parents' Meetings, Staff Meetings and INSET
  • sharing pastoral responsibilities including form tutorship or roles within the House system

It should be noted that the above list of duties is not necessarily an exhaustive statement of the final responsibilities of the post. It is intended to give an overall view of the position and should be taken as guidance only. The post holder may be required to undertake any other reasonable task requested by the Headmistress which fall within his or her capabilities and which are in accordance with the usual practice of an independent boarding and day school.

  • to celebrate and foster awareness of each academic area within Humanities for its own sake, and to draw creative and constructive links between those subjects.
  • to develop the capacity of pupils to think and write logically, cogently and clearly 
  • to awaken and foster a lasting interest in all aspects of the Humanities by providing lessons which are stimulating and enjoyable
  • to help each pupil understand the aims and purpose of each stage of her studies and the requirements of each assessment, thus ensuring that each pupil has the opportunity to realise her full potential
  • to encourage the uptake of the Humanities at GCSE, AS/A-level and BTEC
  • to promote citizenship and Fundamental British Values within the curriculum
  • to provide a high profile for the Humanities throughout the school

Pay and benefits

Starting salaries are based on a teacher's qualifications and teaching experience, according to the Rye teachers' pay scale.  All qualified teachers progress by automatic annual increments up to point RM6 on the Rye teachers' pay scale.  The School does not offer performance related pay.  

All teachers are invited to join the Teachers’ Pension Scheme.  

All salaried staff, full or part-time, are entitled to a fee remission, 50% for full-time staff and pro rata for part-time staff. 

At specified times, staff may use the school’s Fitness Suite, and during Trinity Term staff may use the swimming pool at the advertised times.  Lunch is provided in the school dining room, and refreshments are provided in the Staff Room at morning break and teatime.  There is car parking on site, and the School is easily accessible by bus.

Safeguarding

Candidates must be willing to undergo Child Protection screening appropriate to the post, including checks with past employers and the Disclosure and Barring Service. The post is exempt from the Rehabilitation  of  Offenders  Act  1974,  and  therefore  all  relevant  convictions,  cautions  and bind-overs,  including  those  regarded  as ‘spent’, must  be  declared.  The  amendments  to  the  Exceptions Order 1975 (2013) provide that certain spent convictions and cautions are 'protected' and are not subject to disclosure to employers, and cannot be taken into account. Guidance and criteria on the filtering of these cautions and convictions can be found on the Disclosure and Barring Service  website.  Candidates must not have been disqualified from working with children, and must not be named on the Children’s Barred List or be subject to any sanctions imposed by a regulatory body.  Details of any convictions, cautions or bind-overs subject to disclosure must be passed to the Headmistress before interview in a sealed envelope marked ‘confidential’.  An overseas criminal record check may also be required.
