Job overview

We are seeking to appoint, from September 2022, an inspiring, committed and enthusiastic part time Teacher of Business to join an outward-looking and high achieving faculty.  The successful candidate will be an outstanding teacher, passionate about their subject, and must be willing to contribute to the wider life of the school.

The Faculty

At Bury Grammar School, the Faculty of Social & Computer Sciences is a major contributor to overall success at both GCSE and A level.  With Business, Computer Science, Economics and Psychology on offer, students are given the opportunity to take a broad and exciting selection of subjects that not only further their academic knowledge, but equips them with transferable skills which will help them in undergraduate study and their future employment.  Studying the science of people can tell us a lot about the world beyond our own experience.

Social scientists can help explain how society works - from the causes of UK unemployment and inflation, the impact of globalisation on business performance, to the reasons behind aggressive behaviour.

In addition, Computer Science equips students with essential problem-solving skills through the practical application of theory and techniques.  The faculty consists of nine members of staff who are wholly committed to enabling students to fulfil their true potential in each discipline, alongside providing excellent enrichment activities, which broaden the student experience.

The Department

Business at Bury Grammar School is a high achieving department, gaining excellent results at both GCSE and A level.  Business is one of the most popular A level choices within the Sixth Form and many students are inspired to continue their interest in this discipline either at degree level or on higher level apprenticeship programmes.

The team has a wealth of experience in helping students to prepare successful UCAS applications to many prestigious universities.  The Business department plays an integral role within the Faculty of Social and Computer Sciences and consists of five members of staff, three of which teach full-time in the subject, including the Head of Department.  The Department is responsible for the teaching of AQA GCSE and A Level Business.  The department has the sole use of four classrooms across the campus, each equipped with a PC and Clevertouch Board.  The Department has a strong team ethos and is continually striving to provide outstanding innovative teaching, which simultaneously stretches and supports all learners.

Business GCSE and A Level attract large numbers of students within the Senior School and Sixth Form; we currently have four groups in each of Year 9-11, three groups in Year 12 and two in Year 13.  The Department also provides excellent extra-curricular opportunities for students including Young Enterprise, Dragon’s Den, The Tenner Challenge, BASE and the IFS Student Investor Challenge.  We also offer extra workshop/clinic sessions to give small group and one to one support according to the needs of each student.

Our School is a family of independent, selective, day schools for girls and boys aged 3 to 18, which combine a strong tradition of academic excellence with the best in modern educational practice. The School has a long and rich history of excellence extending back 450 years and our staff, pupils and alumni are proud of the School’s long-standing traditions. Our modern, inclusive School community welcomes students and staff from different faiths and cultures. It is the blend of the School’s traditions along with our modern ethos that is a source of great enrichment for the whole community and is what makes the School so special.

Every one of our pupils benefits enormously from belonging both to a small school, where they are known and nurtured as an individual, while at the same time being part of our BGS family of Schools which is able to offer a huge variety of educational experiences and an excellent learning environment. Through our unique blend of single-sex education from ages 7-16 and co-education in our Pre-School, Infant School and Sixth Form, we offer the ‘best of both worlds’ for our pupils at every stage of their educational journey. Our vibrant and rigorous curriculum is designed to engage and challenge our pupils whilst fostering an intellectual curiosity, which translates into impressive academic performance.

The School is led by our Principal, Jo Anderson, who is supported by a strong and dynamic senior management team and dedicated Board of Governors. We are a member of the Girls’ School Association (GSA) and the Headmasters' and Headmistresses' Conference (HMC) and have been rated ‘excellent’ by the Independent Schools Inspectorate.

One of our key strategic objectives is to maintain, recruit, nurture and develop first class teaching and support staff. You can be sure that as an employer we are focused on creating an outstanding workplace for all our staff so that we can attract, retain and engage talented individuals who have a desire to transform the lives of others.

A successful education is very much about team work and every member of staff at Bury Grammar School recognises that together we have the opportunity to change our pupils’ lives. Whether this is part of our fantastic catering team who provide our pupils with nutritious meals, our dedicated estates team who maintain our beautiful grounds or as a member of our inspiring teaching staff, everyone has an important part to play.
