About International School of Madrid - Primary

The International School of Madrid is a British school founded in 1971 by Mr. Alfonso Mialdea, with Mrs. Anne Mazón as Head. It was then a primary school, known as the International Primary School. It started out in El Viso, Madrid with 38 pupils aged between two and eight years.

In 1978 when, by Spanish law, foreign schools had to choose whether or not to accept host country nationals, the school, where Spanish language and culture for all had, from the start, been strongly promoted, chose to become a school for all nationalities. It was, and is, firmly believed that Spanish children in English medium education should not lose their own language and culture and that other nationalities should have the opportunity to benefit from the rich culture of the host nation.

The school grew rapidly and in 1986 moved to a new home in Rosa Jardón in the Chamartin area of Madrid.

Now also taking pupils of secondary age the school became known as the International School of Madrid (I.S.M.). Since September 1999 the Secondary Department has been housed at a new purpose constructed building near Arturo Soria street, at Serrano Galvache no.13.
