Job overview

United Learning

Ashford School is part of United Learning, a large, and growing, group of schools aiming to offer a life changing education to children and young people across England.

Our schools work as a team and achieve more by sharing than any single school could. Our subject specialists, our Group-wide intranet, our own curriculum and our online learning portal all help us share knowledge and resource, helping to simplify work processes and manage workloads for an improved work-life balance.

As a Group, we can reward our staff better: with good career opportunities, better pay, benefits, and ultimately, the satisfaction of helping children to succeed. We invest in our staff wellbeing. Our academies each have at least eight INSET days per year (with three of those solely dedicated to planning), and an ongoing group-wide wellbeing programme. It's an ethos we call ‘the best in everyone’.

The Role:

We are seeking an inspiring and skilled part-time teacher to join this successful department.

Business and Economics are popular A level subjects in the school. Academic results are strong, and many students go on to study Business, Management, and Economics-related degrees at university.

The Business and Economics department is part of the Humanities faculty which encourages students to make connections between the Social Sciences.  This is an excellent opportunity for a dynamic and passionate teacher; the post would suit an experienced teacher, NQT or a recent graduate wishing to train as a teacher. The applicant would need to be able to teach both Business and Economics at Key Stage 5 only.

With a top honours degree from a leading university in Business or Economics and, ideally, experience of independent education, you should be capable of stretching students of high ability as well as supporting students across the ability range.  Personal engagement, ability and drive are essential. You will need a firm grounding in subject-related theories and models, as well as the ability to inspire your students to use their business and economic knowledge to explain and explore the world around them. You should be familiar with IT and its use as a tool for learning, teaching and administration and be prepared to develop your skills further.

The successful applicant will be expected to build on our successful, engaging approach and will have the scope to develop it. Responding to the needs of the individual student – be it preparing for examinations in after-school classes or guiding the most able through the Oxbridge process – is at the heart of the department’s ethos.  The department contributes to the broader co-curricular life of the school with visits locally as well as through Twilight seminars.

Teachers at Ashford School enjoy a welcoming, comfortable and well-resourced environment and are provided with assistance from a range of support staff.  All teachers act as tutors and are expected to contribute to the busy co-curricular life of the school.

Salary by negotiation and dependent on skills, attributes and qualifications of the successful candidate. Approved arrangements are in place for Newly Qualified Teachers or graduates wishing to train. The school provides extensive opportunities for employees to develop personally and professionally.

Note - We reserve the right to interview and offer to a strong candidate prior to the closing date. It is strongly recommended that candidates submit their applications as soon as possible.

Ashford School is one of the UK's leading coeducational, independent day and boarding schools, having twice been voted Independent School of the Year.  The School was endorsed as excellent in every category during the most recent inspection.

Ashford School is an equal opportunities employer and welcomes applications from all suitably qualified candidates.

We are committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and expect all staff to share this commitment. An enhanced DBS check is required for all successful applicants.

About Ashford School

Ashford School is one of the UK's leading coeducational independent day and boarding school, founded in 1898.  Ashford has all the benefits of being a school of individual character, coupled with the security and support offered by membership of the United Learning group of independent schools and academies. We are proud that the School is able to provide a seamless learning journey for children from 3 months to 18 years on a beautiful campus in the heart of Kent.

Ashford School, East Hill:

Our Senior School and Bridge Nursery make up Ashford School’s beautiful 25-acre campus close to the centre of Ashford and surrounded by Kent countryside.

The Senior School occupies a site in a prominent position in the busy and growing commuter town of Ashford and is close to the International Station. It has on-site playing fields, floodlit Astroturf pitch, tennis and netball courts, as well as a recently opened Sports Centre complete with gyms, fitness suite and an indoor swimming pool.  The school’s boarding houses are on campus.  Further playing fields and sports facilities, including a second floodlit Astroturf pitch, can be found on a 40-acre site adjacent to the Prep School and are well used by both Senior and Prep students.

Ashford School, Great Chart:

Ashford Prep School is situated in the beautiful village of Great Chart on the outskirts of Ashford.  The site also includes our Prep School Nursery and in 2018 our custom-designed Stables Nursery opened.  The site includes beautiful playing fields, an indoor swimming pool, flood-lit Astroturf pitch, indoor gym and a well-appointed Sports Pavilion.

The early years provision has its own dedicated and well-resourced accommodation and staff.

Our students

Currently, approximately 500 students attend the Senior School (aged 11 to 18), including around 120 boarders. It is expected that the number of Senior School students will increase over the next ten years and developments are being planned to allow for this growth. Around 500 students also currently attend the Prep School and Nurseries (aged 0-11).

Our location

Ashford is extremely well connected. London St Pancras can be reached by train in 37 minutes thanks to Ashford International Station’s position on the High Speed Line (HS1). The Eurotunnel is a 15-minute drive away, and the Port of Dover can be reached in 30 minutes.
