Job overview

Teacher of Chemistry

From January 2019 – Fixed Term

Dollar Academy is an independent school of 1,275 girls and boys, set in a beautiful central location. The Academy was named Sunday Times Scottish Independent Secondary School of the Year 2018.

Ideally, this post is for five terms from January 2019 while one of our current teachers is undertaking work for the SQA, although a post for two terms is also a possibility if that is more suitable.

We are looking for a capable teacher to join this ambitious, innovative and highly successful department comprising six members of teaching staff and a dedicated support technician.   The person appointed should be able to teach the full range of courses offered from Form I to Form VI, and demonstrate a genuine love of the subject, enthusiasm for teaching it and an imaginative, creative and energetic approach to helping pupils to share this enjoyment.  Computers, interactive technology and web-based resources are an intrinsic part of Chemistry teaching, and fluency with these, together with a thoughtful approach to their use, is essential.

We aim to help all of our pupils to achieve their full potential in Chemistry, to develop real confidence in their abilities and to appreciate the beauty and utility of the subject and we believe that experimental work, both illustrative and investigative, is at the core of every successful Chemistry course. Each teaching laboratory is equipped with its own fume-cupboard, a full range of standard glassware and apparatus, a visualiser and an interactive whiteboard with dedicated data-logging interface. There is also a dedicated Advanced Higher laboratory equipped to support advanced practical work. The department boasts a rotary evaporator, two UV/visible spectrophotometers, an FT-IR spectrometer and an extensive range of data-logging probes.

We currently prepare pupils for National 5, Higher and Advanced Higher examinations. Knowledge of the Scottish education system would be extremely helpful, but is not essential.

In a typical year around 100 pupils will sit National 5 Chemistry with over 70% achieving grade A. At Higher we generally present between 60 and 70 pupils, with results largely mirroring those at National 5.   We have an ambitious Form VI at Dollar, and Advanced Higher Chemistry is very popular with between 30 and 40 pupils studying the subject each year.   Whilst many of our pupils will go on to follow careers in engineering, medicine, veterinary medicine or dentistry, a significant number choose to study Chemistry at university and former pupils of Dollar Academy are employed throughout the chemical industry and academia.

Members of staff are encouraged to be involved in the wider life of the school, and the Academy has an extensive co-curricular programme in which all members of staff participate.

The salary for the post will be in accordance with the SNCT main grade salary scales with the Dollar enhancement of 10% in addition. It should be noted that the Chartered Teachers pay scale does not apply to teachers employed by the Academy.

Candidates should either be registered with the GTC Scotland, or eligible for registration.

Applicants should complete the Academy’s Teaching Staff Application Form (downloadable from the Academy’s website) and also provide a covering letter.  A CV is optional.

These should be e-mailed  to recruitment@dollaracademy.org.uk

The closing date for applications is Friday 7th December 2018.

All appointments are subject to receipt of a satisfactory PVG Scheme Record or Scheme Record Update from Disclosure Scotland.

About Dollar Academy

Dollar Academy was founded in 1818 as the UK’s first co-educational day and boarding school and has been at the heart of Scotland’s educational development for 200 years. The school is the Sunday Times Scottish Independent School of the Year 2018.

Dollar has over 1250 pupils aged 5-18, of whom approximately 75 are boarders. The school’s extensive 70 acre campus is set in a landscape of extraordinary natural beauty at the foot of the Ochil Hills in Central Scotland and is within easy reach of both Edinburgh and Glasgow. Edinburgh airport is conveniently situated and can be reached in 45 minutes.

Dollar is distinguished by its excellence in pastoral care, co-curricular provision and classroom teaching.

Enjoyment of learning lies at the heart of this school and the aim is for all pupils to gain satisfaction from a real commitment to study and participation in the great range of sporting, art and cultural activities on offer.

Dollar pupils undertake internationally recognised SQA examination courses and, in a typical year, over 65% of exam results are at Grade A. Although firmly grounded in the values of Scottish education, Dollar takes a deliberately international approach and the diverse boarding community is at the heart of school life.
