Job overview

This is an opportunity to apply for the post of Teacher of Chemistry in an outstanding Catholic school with a long and proud tradition, which has consistently adapted and developed to meet the needs and ambitions of its pupils and parents.

The school has played an important role in Catholic education in the City of Liverpool since the mid-19th Century. Founded in 1853 as the Catholic Institute by Fr James Nugent, it was taken over by the Congregation of Christian Brothers in 1902 and remains in their trusteeship; although they are no longer involved in the teaching or day-to-day management of the College. In 1920 the school was renamed St Edward’s College and in 1938 moved to our present extensive site in West Derby. In 1947 it became a Direct Grant Grammar school, switching to Independent status under the Assisted Places scheme in 1979. In 1991 the College became fully co-educational after a period of admitting girls to the Sixth Form, and to enable it to serve more fully the City and Archdiocese of Liverpool, it moved into the Maintained sector as a Grant Maintained school in 1997. For the last nine years it has been an Academy. The College has been the Cathedral Choir School of Liverpool Metropolitan Cathedral since 1974 and has developed the Cathedral’s first Girls’ Choir which shares liturgical choral duties with the Boys’ Choir. It is the only secondary Catholic cathedral school in England.

The College has an enviable reputation not only in Liverpool but also in the wider education world for its academic achievement, its sporting success in many disciplines and the quality of its music education. Most importantly, it is renowned for the young adults it produces who are aware of their own potential as unique individuals but even more aware of their responsibility to others. This is well illustrated by our alumni who are prominent in so many fields and examples of whom can be found on the College website. Their appreciation is illustrated by their willingness to be involved in many aspects of College life and their support for regular Alumni events.

We are looking for an outstanding candidate who can build on our current success, retain links with our traditions and maintain our position as an outstanding school confident of moving into the future and facing whatever challenges the changing education landscape brings. To achieve this the right candidate will need to demonstrate: Innovation in the face of challenge, particularly in driving improvement in academic standards; Role model leadership, creating an environment of trust, openness and support where all pupils and staff can excel; Excellence in all forms of communication for all internal and external stakeholders presenting a clear and compelling vision for the College.

In return we can offer you a wonderful pupil body who are confident and hardworking; a staff who are experienced and dedicated to the success of St Edward’s College and always ready to “go the extra mile”; a supportive Governing body who bring a wide range of experience to their role; and parents who appreciate the excellence of the education their children are receiving and who are supportive of the College.

We are seeking to appoint an energetic, innovative and hardworking Teacher of Chemistry to join the department and inspire students.

The successful candidate will be:

• A teacher able to confidently teach Chemistry up to and including ‘A’ Level

• Willing to participate in and establish new co-curricular activities in the subject.

Pupils at the College receive five one-hour lessons of Science across the two-week timetable in Years 7-9. At Key Stage 4, pupils follow the AQA Science syllabus, and are taught according to their curriculum pathway: Core, Additional or Triple Science.

At A Level, subjects in the Science Faculty are popular choices among students with the addition of Psychology swelling the numbers. Students study the AQA syllabus for Biology, Chemistry and Physics and WJEC for Psychology.

There are six laboratories on campus with three Laboratory Technicians assisting the faculty.

Subject-based academic clubs are run regularly for GCSE and A-Level help with a fun and engaging weekly after-school STEM Club for pupils in Key Stage 3. There are regular visits to local universities for pupils and students to enhance their learning, taking part in Salter’s Chemistry Festivals, attending workshops and revision days.

Weekly Sixth Form Lectures for all students encompass a wide range of subjects and have included a number of talks from lecturers and experts in the field of science. Regular Careers Breakfast Clubs open to all pupils and students again cover a wide range of professions with a number of talks delivered by those in scientific-based fields.

Developments currently underway in the Science Faculty include;

• New GCSE courses being followed, with the ending of ‘early entry’ for Core Science, so all assessment now takes place at the end of Year 11.

• Introduction of separate sciences ‘triple award’ for the most able and motivated pupils at GCSE (this has not been offered in the past).

• Introduction of BTec Applied Science in the Sixth Form, from September 2018, to offer a Science route for students who are not scoring the top grades at GCSE and/or are more suited to a continuous assessment pathway than to terminal examination.

• A need to develop a higher profile for STEM activities, in conjunction with the Mathematics and Computing Faculty

Details of 'how to apply' can be found in the Recruitment Brochure.

St Edward’s College is a Catholic College educating 11-18 year olds in the heart of Liverpool. Because of its track record of academic success, nurture and enrichment of the whole student the school is extremely popular and oversubscribed, with 900 applications for the 174 places in Year 7. We have very close links to the community including a partnership with our co-located primary school to form the Cathedral Choir School for the Liverpool Metropolitan Cathedral. Our offer of extra-curricular activities ranges from music, drama and a wide range of sports to academic clubs such as mathematics and sciences which have been successful in national competitions. Our success in these areas is bolstered by our excellent sports facilities which include our own indoor swimming pool. Our thriving Sixth Form of over 300 students is one of the largest in the city and is enhanced by the Honours Programme which targets Oxbridge and the Russell group universities.

St Edward’s has over 1100 students on roll from a broad range of backgrounds such that the prior attainment of students based on reading, writing and mathematics is close to the national average. We have strong commitment to musical excellence and 20% of the Year 7 intake is selected on the basis of musical aptitude. Whilst the percentages of students on free school meals, with SEND and with English as an additional language are below national averages, the percentage of students with an educational health and care plans (EHCP) is well above the national average, as the College is frequently identified as the school of choice on EHCPs. Overall Attainment 8 is significantly above the national average and we have a strong ambition to improve our Progress 8.

Since its foundation in 1853, St Edward’s College has evolved and grown in order to meet the needs of the students that it serves. The College was founded as the Catholic Institute by Fr James Nugent, who served the poor of the city of Liverpool, and provided education and food for underprivileged boys in the inner city. In 1902 it was taken over by the Congregation of the Christian Brothers, an order founded by the Blessed Edmund Rice with a mission to serve the poor. In 1920 the school was renamed St Edward’s College and in 1938 moved from Hope Street to its present extensive site in West Derby. In 1947 it became a Direct Grant Grammar School and later an independent school under the assisted places programme. The first cohort of girls were welcomed into Year 7 in 1991 when the College became co-educational; the College became a state comprehensive in 1997. In 2011, St Edward’s became one of the earliest schools to adopt single Academy Trust status. In 2023 the trusteeship of the College transferred from the Christian Brothers to the newly formed national Gaudete Trust, an umbrella organisation for Catholic religious orders in education. Throughout these many changes the College continued to provide high quality Catholic education with a clear focus on the values of the Gospel and a desire to bring out the best in its students.
